A question for you guys. How would you go about getting a dog to search better on his own. This dog is already certified but his handler must present every little thing to the dog. He wants to work very fast and runs past things with out checking, this usually causes him to miss the explosives.
I'm at a loss, we have tried boxing him in to slow down and just letting him run off lead till he wears himself out, nothing seems to work.
And before someone says get another dog, unfortunatly that is not up to us, we are stuck with this dog and need to make him work better.
Thanks in advance for your help!
Again, I'm no expert here, but I think you get him to slow down and be more thorough by laying out more rewards for him to find in a smaller area so that he realizes that there might be something at every step...I wish I could get Joanne to post. She was with FEMA for 10 years and probably has exactly the right answer.
I am very very hesitant to put anything about bomb dogs on the net right now for security reasons. I suggest you find a very experienced and competent trainer in your area to work with to resolve such problems.
Luke, My bomb dog was the same way. Have the handler relax and don't pump the dog up for the search. Use the body to block his forward motion and use a monotone voice. If he runs by a target then 360 him right back. Thats all I feel comfortable suggesting given the sensitive nature of the subject. Kevin and Johan are correct. An experiencedd trainer in EDD's is needed here.
No...I'll be doing a show at Lauderdale Lakes...I'm a musician/sound engineer/production manager blah blah blah...I'm doing a show with Regina Belle who I production manage for and with Gerald Albright, jazz saxophonist. You're a little too far north for me to try and reach with the time I have on that Saturday...maybe next time. Your dogs look great, man...would love to see you work with them. I'm still trying to figure out what I want to do with Brenna. She's 9 months now and I've got to make a decision whether to do Schutzhund or S&R. You seem to have got your guys really worked out...I envy you, pal.
yeah...I know. Brenna's kennel had 10 years of FEMA work with a few different dogs and her mom is Kirschental lines. She's made to work, man. Loves doing anything hard and fast. Never gets mad, never gets her feelings hurt, quick to forgive me if I screw up. Angelique said it right off the bat when she saw Brenna's lines: solid nerves!
I'm leaning towards Schutzhund because my schedule with work, while it is pliable, I don't think is pliable enough to do FEMA work. Schutzhund I can kind of do at a slightly slower pace. Anyway, maybe next time...
