On Monday I brought home my new GSD working line pup, aged 2 months and 3 weeks old.
Her faeces was loose from the start and I thought I detected roundworm in it.
I therefore wormed her and hopefully, that will clear.
However, today, 3 days later she's still got diarrhoea..
She's drinking plenty and i'm soaking her food, so I'm not too worried about dehydration.
Her appetite is very very good. She's eager to feed and eats very quickly.
Her moods etc, don't seem affected and i'm hoping that it'll clear up soon. If there's no change by the weekend, i'll pop her along to the vets.
She's 8.3kgs at the moment.
Any advice from anyone would be most welcome.
Thanks very much.
Gary

If you have ruled out worms, I'm a "firm" heh, believer in the pumpkin trick. One tablespoon pumpkin (out of the can) in her meals. Pumpkin is awesome and works for firming, or softening...natural balance.

Thanks for that Michele..
Pumpkins are quite rare here in the UK, but i'll have a look to see if I can find one in the supermarket...
I did detect worms yesterday in her faeces, so she definately had/has them. The worming tablets given yesterday should have done the trick by now, so i'm hoping the motions will solid up soon..
I'm just thinking of the worst case scenario that it doesn't and I have look at something else.
I'm also conscious that the environment is new etc..

Pumpkin is probably the best, fastest 'cure'.
However, if your dog dislikes pumpkin (like mine), you can feed a mixture of boiled chicken, brown rice and some goats milk yogurt. Mix it with the pups normal food (Feed it less of its normal dry, no canned if you feed canned on top).
Make sure to take off any skin/fat from the chicken. And no bones at all.
Its a plain diet that won't upset the stomach. And the yogurt helps to get the right bacteria back in the intestines. It works pretty fast.

Like I said, Pumpkin is a more cost effective, and has faster results. My dog now dispises the stuff and won't eat his food if theres any pumpkin in it. I have an English Springer Spaniel a while ago, she would devour the stuff.
If you go with canned pumpkin, look for the stuff witout all the spices and such in it.

Gary
I would drop a sample of her stool to your vet , perhaps other than worms, Coccidia is there too, that is a parasite you won't see with a naked eye
Good luck Gary I hope your pup recovers..

Just got back from the vets...
The vet has had a good examination of her and pronounced her fit and healthy.
She weighs the same as she did 10 days ago (8.3kgs), but that's to be expected with the diarrheoa.
Her temperature, eyes, gums etc etc were all well.
He thinks is might be a parasite called Giardia;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giardia
I got some tablets for her, together with some pro-kolin paste, which hopefully should sort it out.
I've also got some worming tablets for next week.
When we got home, Xena did her business and guess what? It was solid !
So perhaps the visit to the vet and just meeting him was all that was required... ROFL
I'll be giving her the pro-kolin and the tablets nevertheless, because i've money on it, she'll be loose again tomorrow otherwise..

Gary,
Expect to see loose stools again after de-worming her. I don't understand, did the vet say he thinks or she does have giardia. You need a very fresh stool, and he needs a microscope and there won't be any guessing. Don't medicate your dog unless you have to. Sress can also be a factor (you did say you just brought her home). She's going through an adjustment time with you and is under stress. Adding water to the food can also be conducive toward producing a loose stool.

Hi Michael,
Yeah, i'm going to de-worm her again next Tuesday, so it migh tbe loose again..

He was guessing...
Sress can also be a factor (you did say you just brought her home). She's going through an adjustment time with you and is under stress.
Yeah, that's been crossing my mind too... The thing is, she's so confident and bold she seems to have adjusted and settled real quick. Perhaps it's a front, and she still is adjusting and is a little stressed..
Adding water to the food can also be conducive toward producing a loose stool.
Mmmmm. Not sure how to approach this one then...as the breeder had been soaking her food, prior to feeding, and i've continued. Are you suggesting/advising feeding her the complete food dry, or with very little soaking?
Thanks again for your contributions...
