Right, We are finally getting some rain in Florida after a drought. The problem is (at my home anyway) that the ground is saturated in water and the earthworms are rising to the top. With temps in the low to mid 90s, the worms are stuck between a rock and a hard place. They are staying at the top of the earth and the sun is putting the whammy on em. Now I got a bunch of dried earthworms at the base of the grass.
The problem is...the little monster can find these things like crazy. I've seen him at a full run, smell an earthworm raisin, then slam on the brakes and pick up a dried tasty morsel. The nose amazes me. I've had to put the long line back on him to stop the smorgasboard. Question is, will these hurt him? He'll even slurp a few down after a full meal like their desert.

I think that as long as they didn't die from eating snail bait or other pesticide, and as long as they aren't living on plant matter that has been treated with insecticides, then they are probably not a problem to the dog --- but I think it all depends on what the worms ate. They do eat some soil as the burrow through it, so if there was sewer sludge in it, like near a septic tank and leach field, then I guess I'd teach "drop it" tomorrow.
P.S. I've never actually looked it up, so .... JMO.

Yea, My back yard stays natural. In some of the pics I've posted you can see that my yard slopes to a small freshwater river. The water table is not far below so the rains are keeping things moist. This time of year its an earthworm Mardi Gras. No harmfull substances are put down.

In that case, I would go so far as to say they are probably pure lean raw meat protein.
I read that humans who eat earthworms purge their alimentary canals first if possible because of the probability of e.Coli in them, but dogs have that short zippy system that shoots raw meat in one end and out the other before it has a chance for pathogens to colonize.

I ate some sun dried leeches once on a dare (made $50!), I guess I am lucky I didn't get sick
My dog ate worms as a pup. Worms were some of the cleaner things he took a liking to. Elk poo, deer poo, moose poo, cat poo.....well you get the idea.
After having my sister's malinois cross for a couple of years I was just so happy my pup wasn't rolling it it! Cleaner for the human if they eat it and don't roll in it
Seriously though...I started the "leave it" games pretty young, and the dog seemed to grow out his taste for it thank the Lord.
Can I ASS-ume that the worms are easy for the pup to sniff out but hard for you to see? Could some of them be raked up? Have you noticed any adverse reactions to the worms yet? I don't think I would be overly concerned....
Cheers

The only way I know they are there is when he makes a quick pit stop and buries his nose in the grass. When he lifts his head he's got the thing hanging out of his mouth. I tell him "leave it" and his floppy ears go back and he runs for the other side of the yard slurping the thing down. Little monster.
OK. So its no big deal then. Still, long line time again and teach the leave it command in the immediate future.

Howard, it's probably along the lines of the 17 year Cicada swarms that we are going through in the Chicago area.
They are fine to eat in small numbers but too many can cause some stool issues or tummy problems. Sort of like a human going to one of those all you can eat Brazilian Steahkouses. Things just aren't right for awhile after that.
Lucy ignored them for the most part then one day decided she loved them and must have gobbled down 20 or more. The next day, dry, tough stools, threw up twice and was lethargic. One more day without letting her eat any and she was back to her normal wild Beagle self. I have been keeping her on the long line now even in the fenced yard until they are gone. She still get's one or two if I'm not paying attention, but no more letting her gobble down as many as she want's.

My first chow, Pivo, munched on a gazillion cicadas in 04 when they hit MD. It turned his poop to a tar like substance and we had to keep him inside more so he couldn't eat them. Don't know about worms, I'd think they'd have more water content than a cicada. Then if they're dehydrated, dunno.
Our Eskimo grabbed a baby bird, fallen from the nest, and my wife told him no. Like Howard said, he took off running and looking over his shoulder like a little thief the entire time. My wife looked at me and yelled at me for laughing. I wasn't laughing but was about to because she has not trained him yet. He buried it as soon as he got out of site but my wife caught him in the act and put the bird back.

Keith,
yea, his poop is dark lately. He also barfed yesterday. First time I've seen him do this. He eats grass also but sometimes I think its just boredom.

It's probably the worms. I doubt there is any long term problems but if he eats too many he probably won't be feeling 100%. Try to limit his intake. I still have Lucy on the long line so I can correct when she starts to bury her nose in the ground to pick one up.
