what is a good source of omega3&6 fatty acids? i have been feeding a can of jack mackrel a week. in horses you feed 1# per 100# of horse. what is the ratio for dogs.
Dogs sometimes have trouble converting plant based omegas due to the fact that they are carnivores.
I use salmon oil and feed a raw diet, seems to work for us!! Salmon oil is given at 1000mg/20pounds of body weight.....in times of stress 1000mg/10 pounds.

I don't use much alfalfa, as several of my dogs scratch like crazy when I feed it, even in small amounts.
I use ground flax seed for Auster (I think it tastes pretty good too). The dosage really depends on how much the dog can handle and how much they need. Auster gets a tablespoon or so when I give it to her, but I've heard of giving more and less. I feed canned fish sometimes as well.
If cost is a concern (for large multi dog households) then flax seed is probably the most effective solution since it costs $1-$2/lb (US) in the grocery store and the $15 coffee grinder to process it is a one time investment. I use it because my mother doesn't like it when Auster has stinky fish breath. I also use it because the oils are sealed in their natural protective coating (seed) until minutes before I feed it so there's no worry of it going rancid.

I use flax oil (cold pressed, organic, high lignan) purchased from my local health food store. However, I was told by a human that eats the stuff that the ground flax seed has more available nutrients than the oil. Don't know about that, but the way she explained it, it made sense.
I think I'll probably switch over to the salmon oil....I just hate shopping at Mall-Wart.
Grinding Flax seed is the way to go IF you use Flax seed. Flax seed starts to peroxidize the minute you grind it. The oil in the bottles has no real benefit as it has already lost it's usefulness because it has peroxidized already. Grind it as you go.
Even with "Exclusive SpectraVac pressing technology, which eliminates the destructive effects of heat, light and oxygen...."???
OK, I'll take your word for it. But I think I put enough powder on their food, what with the kelp and alfalfa, so I'll probably go with the salmon oil instead.
