I am new to this forum and to owning a working GSD. (My posts will probably indicate how naive I am). We recieved a copy of Lenco's pedigree (in German) and were able to locate his parents information on the easier to read GSD database. I now have several questions:
Where can I find explanations for the abbreviations that are listed?
I there anyway I can post a link to the pedigree site and get feedback from some of you about what his lineage indicates? (Not for an in depth evaluation because I know that would require a hands-on exam, just some general observations about what his heritage indicates.)
My last question is: The dam's owner (my sister and brother-in-law) imported her from the breeder in Germany after she was already bred. They have been unable to fight their way through AKC to register her, which means the entire litter lacks any registration paperwork. Will this impact us being able to do any serious work with him?
I admit to being uneducated, but this seems to be a very knowledgable group and I really want to learn.
Do a search on the internet for "German pedigree abbreviations." A long list of sites for you to look through are available, and most of them are pretty easy to read.
Also, when they are describing the dog in German, you can paste the German into this site: http://world.altavista.com/ to get a rough translation of what was written. Sometimes it's screwy if you don't have a german keyboard to write the text with, but it does give you a general idea.

Yes, if you post the link people can provide feedback on the dogs in the pedigree if they know about those dogs. I'm OK at reading west german working lines, there are many on this board skilled at reading those as well as the DDR & Czech pedigrees.
I can only tell you what I know. The entire situation is rather convoluted.
My sister and brother-in-law purchased Lady (bitch) from owner in Germany. Apparently Lady was "accidentally" bred post-purchase and was pregnant when shipped to the U.S.
My sister attempted to register Lady with AKC using paperwork they recieved, but AKC would not accept it. They then worked with their German contact to obtain the information that AKC needed but for whatever reason, were still unsuccessful (read this as AKC still did not accept it) .
Once the puppies were born, they concentrated on raising and placing them. Two of his littermates are training and working drug detection with individual police departments and one is training on K-9 officer with the state patrol. My sister continues to work on registering Lady.
We love Lenco very much and that will not change regardless. But it would be nice to know how this affects his opportunity to train and work.
I am not certain if this is will work or not, but here is a link to copies of his pedigreel

If you want to compete in schutzhund sport no problem except you wouldn't be able to compete in competitions limited to GSD's as he is not registered. Also, obviously not a good idea to ever breed him since none of his progeny could be registered.
Thanks for the information. We do not plan on breeding him and, in fact, are scheduling him for castration now that he is grown. We can then get his ILP from the AKC and do some competition obedience work with him if we want.
However, I am glad that we can still participate in Schutzhund as a sport because it really seems interesting to me and it's what he was bred for.
I would still like to get opinions on his pedigree, if anyone knows or is familiar with his bloodlines.
Thanks in advance for all of your help in this learning experience.
Thanks to all of you for taking the time to answer my questions and help me out with this. I also appreciate the link to this other site.
I am trying to learn as much as possible about how these dogs think and what makes them tick. I figure the more I know, the better owner I can become. Lenco is going to benefit as much as me from this forum.
We may never do any serious competition with Lenco, but that doesn't mean we can't have fun learning
