I have been feeding my 3 year old GSD on BARF diet for about 6 weeks. I keep increasing the amount of food, but she does not gain weight, she keeps getting thinner. She seems to be active and healthy, just really too thin, and getting thinner. Right now she weighs 57 lbs. and daily is eating 2 C raw ground turkey, a turkey neck, 1 C mixed vegetables, 2 T apple cider vinegar, 2 t alfalfa, 1 t kelp, 2 T olive oil, 1 T flax seed oil, and a couple of eggs a week. Any suggestions?

Inrease the amount of food you are giving( not the supplements, the meat!)I would increase it to at least 2 lbs..although I would perhaps divide the feeding for now so your dog doesn't get the runs, if your dog is prone to being sensitive in the stomach. One rule of thumb is 3 to 5 % of body weight should be fed daily.I just feed my dogs a few pounds a day, sometimes more, sometimes less and they maintain their weight. If you see the dog getting thin, then you must increase the amount of food.
Also, be sure that the dog is worm free by bringing a stool sample to the vet.

It would also really help if you added more fat do the diet- turkey is very low in fat.
I would add a pound of ground beef.
Or, you could alternate and have entire meals of beef instead of turkey.
Its cheaper than trying to fatten her up on turkey and she needs its fat content. And what ever you do, don't take the skin off the poultry. skin's very nutritious and although many people 'brag' that they clean it off for their dog, they are doing more harm than good.

I'd do more meaty bones and less ground meat, personally. Can you find chicken necks or backs in a big package from a butcher in the area? They are cheap (around 50 cents a lb here) and the extra fat is probably exactly what she needs.
Dogs need mostly meaty bone with some meat and organs, not the other way around.
As you can see from the different replies, it's not an exact science <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> .

When you say a cup of mixed veggies, is that AFTER they have been pulverized? Isn't that an awful lot of veggies?

In my oppinion a cup is not alot. They are still mostly water when you think about it. Depending on the breed and the specific dog, some need more some need less (same goes for grains and protein).
It is not an 'exact' science but I'll take any little mistake (like a bit more vegetables than the dog needs) over any commercial food.
I am new at this too and was actually a VERY hard sell on the raw food method.
I decided to give it a shot a year ago out of couriosity and was AMAZED to see the difference in my Giant in less than 1 week on the diet.
He looked like someone was washing him and exercising him behind my back, compared to before!
I really feel guilty for not trying this diet earlier.

Dogs have very little need for veggies. LOL, my mother doesn't want to make Auster eat anything the princess doesn't like so Auster doesn't get too many veggies (I'm not suggesting this method, but Auster's full of energy and feeling fine).

I usually feed green tripe instead of veggies. I like it better because it is veggies as they're supposed to be eaten!! LOL ( from a dogs perspective ,that is!!)I should add that I do geive veggies occasionally, but I prefer the tripe.

Veggies can't hurt and might help - I feed a bunch to my gang. I'd give the dog a whack more meat and bones, and sorry to ask - how is her poop and her appetite?

I am wondering if anyone uses the diet proposed by
Wendy Volhard and Kerry Brown in the book, 'Holistic Guide for a Healthy Dog'? She uses grains, mainly oats and buckwheat, as a part of the diet. For sure grains are less expensive than meat and she insists that dogs need carbohydrates. When I grew up in Alaska, a lot of mushers used
cooked rolled oats with raw 'trash' fish thrown in as the main diet. Thoughts anyone?
Thanks!
