Iv ebeen interested in this breed since i was young but never got a chance to get one. ive owned GSD and minature pinschers(when i was little). How much excersise adn energy do these dogs need compared to mini pins and german sheps?
Malinois are intense dogs with huge amounts of energy and drive. They need lots of exercise to work off their seemingly inexhaustible supply of energy, more than a Shepherd.
If you stick a mali on a treadmill he'll get off when he's dead
Its a breed that will keep on going, if you get a good one, and YOU need to tell them when to stop. Unfortunately when you tell them to stop they tend to drive you crazy because they keep wanting more

Yeah Pity the Mal owner that doesn't spend adequate (brain/train)time with his /her dog. Left to their own devices they will make their own fun.. Dig holes in the yard the size of the grand canyon or rip the crate apart, destroy furniture, baseboard mouldings and drywall, ...
My dog goes and goes as well when there is a game to play. I've seen her play fetch with us for 5-6 hours and that is with a huge 14" Jolly Ball horse toy! The only thing I've seen that really knocks the stuffing out of my girl is sheep herding.
That being said if you have the time to spend working with a dog there really isn't (IMHO) a more satisfying rewarding dog to train especially if you get a strong euro working breed line Malinois.
Just you need to know what you are getting into or you could be doing yourself and the dog a dis-service if you are not prepared to give the time to your animal.
Energy level when not working can vary greatly between lines. There are many different lines out there with different characteristics that you may or may not find appealing. Some breeders like an insane dog and get a kick out of a dog that is so excited it can't out quickly. Others prefer a level headed dog that can think. Some dogs can never calm down. Some are great in the house and safe around kids. If you are attracted to the Mal's work ethic, its desire to bond closely with its owner, its athleticism and relative lack of health problems then go for it. Just take the time to research breeders and find one that has a philosophy similar to your own. Be aware that some breeders will say what they think you want to hear to sell a pup. Read the boards (there are many)and you'll get to know breeders. Read trial results and talk to people who were there if you can't go yourself. Good luck! They're an amazing breed. I'm glad I found it.

Although this post is somewhat older....I have to say something.
This comment does not sit well with me as all of the Mals I have seen have been great around kids that have been taught to respect dogs. I do not think it is a matter of keeping the kids safe around dogs in general, but rather keeping the dogs safe from kids that are allowed to do things to a dog that encourages bad behavior out of the dog.
I do understand that some dogs are just not kid lovers no matter what, but to say that "Some Mals are safe around kids" makes it look like the breed is generally not, which is way off base.
Just my two cents, but like was discussed in a different post....we as dog people, have the responsibility to teach others who do not know better and realize that comments like this are misunderstood easily.
Your furniture, however, is a different story with this breed.....

Carol: shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh !!!!!!! Better to let most people think they DON'T want a mal (for WHATEVER reason), you don't want popularity, look what it's done for our beloved GSD's

This made me smile....
I do not recommend either breed to people who have never had or have only had a "mild" dog before.
When I have my Mal (or even the GSD pup) out, people always say, "I love that dog, I want one." and of course my reply is "No you don't."
