I was just wondering if watermellon has any negative effects on dogs? My boys LOVE it. They like the skin too... They eat it like its a bone, so I figured I'd ask if anyone knew or heard of any negative side effects of it? I heard about grapes.. so I stopped giving those to them- but they really seem to enjoy watermellon, bannana's and honeydew... Any ideas?
Rebekah,
I think mellons are totally fine for dogs, even the rind (though I would make sure it was washed and as free of any pesticides as possible). They are actually one of the best fruits to feed because they are low in sugar. Bananas are evidently very HIGH in sugar, which isn't great for canines... we hardly ever feed them anymore.
As with most fruit and veggies, just make sure your dogs don't go overboard with them or it could cause an upset tummy or diarrhea.
Tessie looooves a good hunk of watermelon. Just gotta watch out for the diarrhea, as Natalya mentioned. Other than that, I don't think there are any serious side effects.
Well a dog will eat a dirty diaper too, I'm not sure I'll start feeding that as a treat.I think you have to watch when you say a dog loves it,sometimes they love to crunch on things just because at times they miss gnawing on tree sticks, bones all the natural products they would normally chew on so their natural cravings get pacified by our own foods that we eat and stuff around, things they have access to.I can say if there is no harm in it, why not....just don't get carried away
They do get marrow bones and other things to chew on, although Stitch would eat a tennis ball if I let him. Im wondering though, are frosty paw's horrible? I have no idea what they actually put in them- but the dogs like them too.
I get a chew biscuit called "Chew Lotta" it's like a pastry for dogs ,very natural ingredient in it, I get it from our Smiths grocery store, the dogs love it , it smells like milk when they chew on it.It's not something they chew for long but they love it.A good treat if you can get it
If you are looking for something frozen for the dogs try yoghund...its all natural frozen yogurt for dogs. I like the ingredients better than the ones in Frosty Paws.
Grapes are a no, they can be toxic. There are a few fruits and veggies that are harmful. The ones I can think of off the top of my head are Grapes, Onions, Garlic, and the 'toxic' amount varies depending on the dog.
Carrots and apple wedges chilled or a bit frozen make great 'snacks' over summer to beat the heat. Nothing like chewing on a cold carrot to beat the heat.
