I recieved my Prong Collar from Leerburg today, and this evening i took the 7 month old Shepherd pup to the Shepherd Training School, I asked the Trainer to show me how to fit the Prong Collar and to my suprise he said he did not advise me to use it on Fred'
He has owned Shepherds for 40 years, and he said Fred was too young in his opinion to use it on him yet
He said Fred has a very high Drive and he did not want to knock it out of him at his age, better to leave it for a while, What is the opinions of you Guys on this

High drives in a pup are great. You want to mold them. What were you planning on using the prong for? The trainer *may* have a point.

I did use a prong on my male at that age, but not during obedience training. I agree with that trainer in that I wanted to build my pup's drive for the exercises at that age and didn't want to introduce too much control or compulsion yet.
The prong was used on walks to teach him not to drag me down the street. I also used it to correct him for inappropriate behaviours, such as getting in my face at home and barking/biting when he wanted attention. I also corrected unwarranted displays of aggression towards visitors, rough play with my older dog and any other actions that reflected a lack of respect towards me (= inappropriate pack behaviour )
If you're raising Fred to be a sport dog, then maybe you should follow your trainer's advice and forego corrections in obedience for now. (Even a self-correction on a prong will most likely take out drive from a pup that age).
It all depends on what you want out of your dog.
The people here with more experience raising working puppies will hopefully post with much more helpful advice

Depends.
At around that age, I put the prong collar on my dog for self corrections only. It was a practical matter of a dog getting large and pulling like a mule on any other collar.
But ya gotta watch yourself. The prong can "work" too well (especially when your patience may be running thin), and one may be tempted to start correcting him for obedience matters which are better reserved for a teen/adult.

I agree with Alex...
My girl just turned 7 months and will start "formal" training in the middle of July. My trainer wants her to get used to wearing her prong but is absolutley against hooking it up yet.
His reasoning was he doesn't want to break her (confidence) at this time. I do agree with him on this and her wearing it around actually she thinks of it like jewelry...she can't wait to put it on and show it off.

I wanted to use the Prong Collar for Corrections,
But the Trainer says he prefers not too at this stage of his life He said he is going through a Adolencent stage at the Moment,
I told my brother last night what you Guys said on the forum, and he told me the Wife of the Trainer told him last week that Fred has that something special in him, that he does not see too often and he will make a great working Dog if taken along quietly, she tried tp explain to him but she does not speak very good english but my brother knew what she was saying,
So for me to go against what the trainer says would be very wrong of me, and not fair to him. He gives us two hours of his time in two sessions a week, and will not take any payement at all,A very kind gesture indeed, and thanks for the input, it made me feel a lot better and the Prong Collar has been put away for a time later on in the future

That's good Steve! I don't necesarily think putting the prong away is necessary. Just don't use it for corrections now. It is a good idea to get Fred used to wearing it though. I read Ed's info on starting with a prong. Everytime I put the prong on my pup (at 12 mos), I gave her a treat, played tug, tossed the ball, etc. Then, when I began to use it for corrections, I made sure she wore it for 20-30 mins prior/after. I kept praising her with food or toys immediately after putting her prong on her. Now, when I put it on her, she get's eager and excited because she knows we are going to do something fun. Whether it be training, or going for a walk, or a car ride, etc.

Alex, I love that idea ! ..I think some dogs it does not matter with certain handlers but others I think it would not hurt to introduce it that way
Thanks for the tip
