Suppose Im training a PPD to respond to a certain senario, say for example to attack a intruder entering via a window into a bedroom in the middle of the night. After doing some training routines where the agitator actually enters the room as per your average cat burgalar/tree jumper and is repelled by the dog how often should the senario be re-run? I realise to a certain extent this is a how long is a piece of string sort of question.Im talking about a switched on dog with plenty of heart in a situation where combat is a distinct posibilty.
Becarefull Brendon that you do not do this too often where the dog will start to see every person who comes to your house as a threat. Also if you are using equipment hidden or not the dog will then key in on that and see the house as a training field not a home. He will then need the equipment to go into drive. Ed has a great video on PPD. I know a few people who plant helpers in the bush by there house in the dark and let there dog chase them off their property. I warned them that this is good to start building defense but don't over do it. They did and now no one can come near the house friend or foe.
What you describe is a proofing exercise, not a training issue. It would only need to be done if there is a suspicion that the dog has relaxed at home. Do the training on a training field and include owner defense, it will flow naturally from that.
If you can't be a Good Example, then You'll just have to Serve as a Horrible Warning. Catherine Aird.
Thanks for the input guys, I simply dont have the experience to know that if you over do the sort of senarios I outlined above you can make the dog go in the other direction where he thinks every visitor be they friend or foe is to be violently repelled. I presumed the dog would simply become very focused on the specific senario being proofed for, for example, Mr. Pervo coming through the window at 1 in the morning. I hadn't reaslised he might might also treat Aunt Gladys visitng for tea and cake in the same manner.
To expand on the hidden sleeve comment. The hidden sleeve should be used as a proof that your training is real (I hate that word). Once you proved this there is no need to keep using it. Your dog will then get smart and notice the different way a helper presents his arm when he has a hidden sleeve on. Once this happens the effect is gone.
In a situation where a lethal armed night time assault is a possibility and I needed to be as sure as it is possible to be that the dog would repond with a counter attack should the dog be 'refreshed' every, say, 4 months?
Where is everyone? This is a great thread! Unfortunately unlike most I do not answer unless I know the answer. I am a sport trainer so all my answers are PPD 101.
