My dog Charlie and I went camping in the Uintah mountans of Utah. Elevation 11,943 Ft. We camped and hiked. Next Day was Hot! We cooled off in a river that ran through camp. Spent considerable amount of time in water, playing and fishing. Anyways we left that night. Next day his eye's started getting goopy! With somtimes hard boogies(crusties) And somtimes goopy yellow boogies. Has gotten better. But still present about three days later. Is this a cold from the water or a more serious matter?
Doubt if a dog can get a cold in it's eyes from playing in the water. However, he could very well have picked up an infection. If this discharge just started up, I'd say a trip to the vet is in order. Eye discharge can be a symptom of many things. If it was me, I'd take him to the vet. Let us know what you find out, OK?

Ditto with Janice.
Here's a simple test for whether or not eye discharge is more likely to indicate an infection (or other vet-required ailment): the color of the discharge.
Yellow and green are more of an indication of a problem than clear would be.
Of course, clear discharge that continues or worsens should be seen to, too, but it's more likely to be from an irritation or allergies.
Connie's right about the colour - that's the best way to tell. Jenga was having the same issue, recently...his goop was an off-white yellow, sometimes dry, sometimes goopy.
I mentioned it at my last vet visit and the vet checked Jenga out - he was fine, but I definitely felt relieved afterwards. I'd run it by the vet. On that note though, my vet said that sometimes while pups are maturing they have weird health issues that just sort of resolve themselves. And when he said it, it sounded a lot more professional and legitimate - ha ha.
Sometimes I wish there was a "quick-vet" or something you could go to for minor things - kind of like how in the grocery store there's a 1-8 items line. Maybe like a walk-in clinic where a vet student who needs practice could just check out the problem (refer you elsewhere if needed), you pay a small fee, and you're out. Haha. So, "Hey, if this an eye infection?" "Nope, have a good day!"
