My young bitch likes to come over and stand next to me, but with her foot on mine. She's not a dominant type so not sure if she is just claiming me :-)
I've heard there is a meaning behind this but not sure what it is - especially with Dobe's. Anyone know what this means?
Thanks
Lynn

My lab likes to do this as well! I am almost positive that one of Ed's dogs does this to him in one of the videos. I just can't remember which one. For me, she likes to do this as I give her a sit before going outside. I think it is funny because I want to step off to go out the door without her knowing when, so I can see if she will move when I move, or stay until I say "ok." I am interested to hear what this is!

It's all part of the message that you're sending to your dogs. Kind of a ground-rules thing. A canine pack leader would NEVER allow another dog to stand on them.
With some dogs it won't make any difference, just like some dogs can sleep on the bed and go through doors first and still be crazy submissive. But with some dogs it could be translating a message of submission from the owner.

Thanks Amber. When she was very young I waited to see what type of temperment I was dealing with- so no couch, no bed, no sitting on me. She's turned out to be such a sweetie that I don't worry about those potentially dominant positions now. But the foot thing bothers me, I think I will nip that one.

A trainer I really respect once said to me "if your dog saw you as the pack leader he would never put his paws on you". I believe her! I've had a Golden for 10 years and all the behavior I've seen as cute I now realize is dominant behavior...pawing me, bumping her head under my armpit so I pat her, putting her head in my lap. Once we got the GSD, and the Golden started fighting with her, I realized the Golden was a not just a gentle giant-innocent bystander. She was a nasty-ass dominant bitch!
Anyway, I wouldn't make the mistake again of tolerating dominant behavior in a dog. No paws on me!

I guess I should do something about it as well, my pup places her paw on my foot when she sits at my side.
Only time I've done something is when I wasn't wearing shoes and noticed it more.
But now that I think of it.. she does do it quite often..

My Golden sometimes does things that I interperted as Dominant/Agressive ... but then I came across a website that indicated that when your Golden acts this way, it may be an indication of Separation Anxiety.
Ironically just this morning I was thinking of the "Air Bud" movies, and how DOMINATE and IN CONTROL the Golden's are in the movies ... and everyone thinks that they're so cute.
From: http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/goldenretriever.htm
This breed needs to be around people to be happy. If isolated from human contact, or left alone for long periods of time, the Golden Retriever may become mischievous. They can be over-exuberant and distractible.

I think that placing a paw on you *can* be a submissive dog's actions to get attention or reassurance.
My feeling is that it shouldn't be allowed. I think it can demonstrate to the dog that you are open to being dominated, which isn't beneficial..... no matter what the dog's temperament is.
I also think that actually standing on your foot is a dominant behavior.

This thread makes me appreciate that I own a dog, not a horse. I've had my foot stepped-on and held a few too many times by them hoofy beasts, and a dog's paw sure beats the hell out of an enormous hoof any day!
My dog does something I can't quite explain or describe well.. when you're petting her, she sits upright (like a "beg" stance) and wraps her paws around your arms, sort of locking them in place, bows her head (averts eyes), and lets you scratch her chest/neck that way. I discourage it because she uses it to get attention, but it -looks- very sweet. I still haven't figured out if it's dominance, just attention, or something else.
