Aww...thats too bad, he was only three years old. I'll consider self-defense if he had any marks on his skin, or how far away the dog was. It doesn't seem like it was though.
Cops today, eh? (Not saying there all bad either)

I'm sorry, I wasn't. I lean towards the dogs side naturally.

Just remember Nathan that when you're in need of COPS you are HAPPY to see them come
Me & my husband always talk about this, that if we were out with our 2 little girls if we'd see a big dog coming, running at us...it's going down.Do not think for a second that you need to feel teeth on your face in order to shoot it down.Sorry I'm a dog lover to the core BUT a LOOSE dog running at me & my kids ,gets no special treatment unless he is a tea cup...Dog owners need to make sure their beloved pet does not get out.If that dog instead of running after an off duty officer came running at some children, then what .Keep your dogs where they belong...on your property!

Well, I have to agree with Michael & Angelique, but in this case, with the cop and I quote: "Last month, Sheehan, 36, of Hauppauge, was charged with animal cruelty and discharging a firearm over a public highway. Suffolk police have opened an investigation and said they are monitoring the legal proceedings.
"He of course says he was being attacked," Cleveland said yesterday. "That isn't supported by the evidence we derived during the investigation.""
That raises red flags to me as far as the man's judgement. His own Sheriff is doubting his reasoning. For all we know, the dog got a few steps ahead of his owner and ran into the officer and was shot. According to the story, the owner was trying to stop his dog. Too bad the story doesn't have more info to make a better judgement, but it doesn't look so good on the officer's part either.

I agree Alex but those stories are so hard to determined who's at fault. We hear so many pit bull bite stories and others that sometimes you don't want to be the next dog bite victim and maybe make too quick of a re-action.....i never want to have to make that decision

Yeah...You guys are right and I won't lie, I was judging the cop without any solid evidence, something I really try not to do.
It makes me want to get a fence around my yard though. (You can never be too careful)

Absolutely spot on!
I'm a dog lover also but I've had to dish out a couple of hard kicks to the teeth to dogs (mainly spaniels I have to say) in defense of my ankles/shins/whatever. One of the dogs also bit my mother on a previous occasion but they get away with it cos they're small.

I must have missed the part of my contract where it said police officers give up the right of innocent until proven guilty.
