Recently was looking at another thread and saw someone say spinning a dog on the sleeve had nor purpose. I was just wondering as to why? I don't train dogs personally myself, but I know back home the dogs in the K9 unit get spun, not for extended periods of time but they do do it.
I figured it was just teaching the dog not to be surprised if they suddenly find themselves off of their feet.
I think the only purpose it has it to teach the dog when he bites he needs to bite hard and keep is grip. When the Decoy spins you want your dog to have a good bite so he doesn't fly off. Other then that i really don't see the point to it.
When a dog runs downfield to apprehend the decoy/helper/suspect the decoy is suppose to spin the dog when the dog makes entry onto the sleeve or suit. That is how you avoid unneccessary injuries and neck jams in training. You want to train and have a healthy dog to be able to hit a perp who won't spin. Thats the place for the dog to get hurt if it is going to happen, not in training. Look at the video below, that is me catching a really fast dog named Atos, imagine if I or no other decoy ever spun this dog, just let him crash into us, his career would be over before it started, and I'd have broken ribs likely. Video of me spinning a very fast and hard hitting dog. I'm barely able to spin him fast enough

Very cool Chris. That actually looks like a lot of fun. I can see your point on the spin, but I wasn't really curious about it before. (Nor did I know about it xD)
Damn Chris!! That is a nice dog! He just blazed to you. Wow. Nice work too! I really like the animated decoys. The guy in our club is really animated and gets the dog into it. He is one of the best in our area. Good work!!
Other than spinning to absorb the dog's momentum, or sidestepping etc, when people are spinning in circles with the dog on the sleeve or suit, they are either trying to get the dog to take a hard grip and maintain it, or they are trying to show off the dog's hard grip and ability to maintain it.
