I have talked to a few butchers in my area about getting chicken necks, they looked at me like I was crazy.
I would like to go with the raw diet but am having a difficult time finding what I need to do so. It is late, and my memory does not serve me well tonight, but I believe Mr. Fawley said something about giving the dogs ummm...was it alphalpha? It came in a large jar and looked like green powder.
So the questions are...where do I get chicken necks...or even whole dead birds? As well as that green stuff?
Thank you for your time.

Tammy, I don't understand why your butchers won,t sell you chicken in quantity. I get chicken quarters for 39ct a lb. for a 40 lb box. When I first talked to the butcher, he told me necks and backs weren't a good bargan because they are rarely separated from the chicken, and I would pay extra for them. I also can get wings, but they are more costly (1.09 per lb) 45lb box. I have 3 15lb (average) terriers and they handle the leg bones fine. I do break them up for my old guy. He tries to swallow them whole. Ask the butcher again about bulk buying.

Really? So then chicken quarters are just as good.
You see, I lent out my puppy tape to a friend, and am working on memory as to what Mr. Frawley said on the topic. I have printed out material on BARF but have not yet found out where to get the stuff it was talking about.
Because our GSP is getting so much gas, I would like to serve her the raw diet. I am doing this slowly. Experimenting to see if she will eat an egg...she like it Then saw if she would eat a neck...she LOVED IT Now I am going to see if she will eat crushed up veggies with her meat.
My only problem is that I am not sure as to how much to serve her, and I am not sure if I will get me new Frawely produced video back in a timely manner.
So I ask you. For an 8 week old pup, how much do I feed her?
Thank you.

This is the diet sheet I received with my puppy: 1 cup raw raw turkey or hamburger, 1 tsp of Super C, 1tbls kelp/alfalfa mix, 2 tbls of very finely chopped veggies. (I used broccoli). Twice a day. I gave him the occasional egg too. I don't give the white of an egg because someone books say they can't digest it easily. I don't know if that's true.
You can buy the kelp/alfalfa from this website and with the shipping it works out about $5 cheaper for me than I can buy it where I live. Yes, my butcher looked at me as if I were crazy too (put your dog on a proper diet buy kibble) but I eventually got a supermarket to order in chicken necks bulk. Some people think you will kill your dog with raw food - I work from home and got reported to the humane society for starving my dog (he was eating raw food) and keeping him in a crate by a man who came into my house.

Expensive? Not at all.
If you buy your food in bulk and have a freezer it actually costs less than feeding a premium kibble..add to that the money you save on vet bills and it is probably cheaper in the long run.
Even if it were more expensive I would still feed my dogs this way, but that's my choice. Everyone has to do what is best for their situation.

There may be a BARF co-op in your area. If not, you may want to look into starting one. Here's the web address of the one in my area so you can see what I'm talking about http://www.socalbarf.com

Tammy the difference I've seen in my 11 and 9yr old dog would be worth any cost increase. The Leg quarters are a heavier, weight bearing bone. The neck or wings would be a better choice for a pup, or you can crush the bones with a hammer. I do that for my oldest dog because he is a gulper, and at 16lb, I didn't like him swallowing whole leg bones.
