How do you tell if a correction is strong enough? I don't think I'm popping hard enough to make a difference... that or I still don't have the prong fitted properly.
Don't go by the yelp. For example my GSD will yelp with slightest correction on prong as he is soft but sometimes this is not enough to correct the behavior if in a situation where he needs more like another dog agressive dog acting ignorant. Any cowering or shutting down yes to much.
Yeah i wasent sure if i should have but the yelp in there or not. It depends on your dog. A soft dog will yelp all the time. It all depends on your dog.
I think maybe I still don't have the prong fit properly on Jake...
on Dixon a short pop works well, on Jake, I might as well not even exist sometimes. I think the Dix is a medium to soft dog, and Jake is hard (newbie guessing here-). Neither has ever yelped when I gave a correction-

Yeah the higher on the neck the better. That way the prong itself is more responsive and effective when you pop it. The only drawback is it is not as easy to put on the dog.
I see bully breeds around town all the time with these huge prong collars on. The problem is they are on so loose that you'd really have to swing the dog in the air to make the prong acuate they are a placebo and are for show if nothing else.
Prongs fitted incorrectly IMO will correct the dog about as much as shaking your finger at it.
I use the quick relise prong collar witch is adjustable more then just taking out a link so there is no excuse not to have it fit popularly. I love it.
The Prong collar should be fit right under the dogs jaw line and around the back of the neck. If it is any lower then pretty much what Geoff said.
Also the smaller "gage" the prong collar is, the MORE teeth it has per inch, which gives a stronger correction (with LESS power applied by the handler) -- On a VERY hard or high-drive beastie, some trainers will even file every 2nd or 3rd set of prongs to a somewhat sharper point, without overdoing it (you want to get the dog's attention & gain his respect NOT do him an injury)...
