Politically Correct. Many departments don't want to use Pit Bulls b/c they feel it would reflect badly on their image. I had no idea image was such a big deal w/LE until I tried to sell a dog named "Blaster." Cops said the superiors wouldn't like the name . Selling them the dog named "Shooter" was definitely out.
There was a really nice Pit/Mal cross at the NAPWDA national workshop this year doing muzzled control and aggression work. What an outstanding dog.
Unfortunately the PC game is HUGE in law enforcement and we have to walk on egg shells every day because of it. I've seen a few departments in our area turn down some really nice pit's for that only reason... they are pit's and their "community" would go crazy if they put Pit Patrol Dogs on the road. It's a shame.
We had a pittie as a single purpose drug dog. I caught a little heat because I trained her and was told to ensure she was assigned to a rural county. She was so good in fact, she was poisoned, in her own kennel, at the handler's house. She worked 4 years and had several felony seizures, not to mention the number nickle and dimers. If memory serves me correctly, which is admittedly less frequently here lately, she worked from about 1998 to 2002. She was taken to a local vet for a physical and immunizations. No ever came to get her. They never could contact the owner. Her name was Lucy and certainly a credit to her breed.

If the dog has what we are looking for, we just change the name. We've had to do that on more than one occasion.
