I just wanted to thank you all for such wonderful info for my new dog. I lurk quite a bit, as I am so busy with her, and run our business from home.
I am a 51 year old Harley driving Grandma, and I never thought I could love a dog this much. Yes, I am definitely the center of her universe, but she is also mine.
I really don't know how I have managed to go my whole life without having a shepherd in my life.
I hope I posted her new picture correctly. If not, please accept my apologies in advance.
As for Harley riding Grandma (with a GSD) IF you do plan to go to Sturgis with your pup, be aware... I was there in 2003 with my big MoJo German Shepherd (pet dog). We were just walking around, soaking in the scene, but for over an hour, not ONE person said anything to me about the dog, in fact, people literally were at times cruising directly out of our way...I thought it somewhat strange, because (in *normal* life , people would stop me and ask about him, or comment or something...it wasn't until MoJo got a little close to some girls butt with his nose, and the gal turned quick around and asked me if he was going after her stash!!! I was as surprised as she was when he did it and then realized OH! NO! people are thinking he's a drug detector dog! Holy cow! and we went off to the park for a while. It was a strange feeling for me (and I'm SURe for the girl!!!) MoJo of course just was out to have a good time, and he did great with all the commotion and crazy Sturgis stuff/noise, etc.
Glad to hear you are hooked on the GSD! (and in the right place to learn all about them)
As much as I would love to ride to Sturgis, we are too far away. With the responsibility of our dog, we can't go.
However, she has gotten used to the rumbling noise when we start the Harleys up (we each have one), and tries to get on the boat before we pull out of the driveway!
I taught her what "swim" means, and she loves it. She is quite the little swimmer! I have been probably overprotective with her, but I don't want her to tire out while in the water and risk drowning.
I do have a question though..How do I stop her from walking by us and nipping at our ankles? It doesnt hurt, just annoying as all get out!

Redirect her to a toy. Distractions are usually the best bet with pups. And keep her tired! It's pretty common--she'll grow out of it. Not soon enough, I know, but that's the joy of living with a pup!
