I have a floppy eared dog and knock on wood he has never had an ear infection (he's 2.5 yrs old). He swims a lot and rolls in the dirt too.
I just occationally clean the dirt out of his ear (part I can see) with a cotton ball (moistened with Avena Sativa Natural Ear Cleaner. Maybe twice a month. Rarely (5 times a year?), I flush his ears with "Avena Sativa" Natural ear cleaner. It leaves the fur around his ears a bit greasy.
Others I know with floppy eared dogs that have more ear 'issues', SWEAR by the Blue Power solution you make yourself. I have not used it, but here is the link:
I don't know if this is coincidence or not, but ever since we changed to a raw food diet (about a year ago) our Golden has never had any more gunky ears. We used to clean them twice a day. Around that time we got stuff from the vet for her ears, which we had to do often, but when it ran out the ears were just fine after that. Normally the gunk and red, inflamed ears came right back.
I use Eqyss MicroTek spray to clean my GSDs ears every once in a while as needed. It seems to be effective, and gentle. I spray it on a cotton ball and gently clean the ear. You can also spray inside, hold the ear for a bit, let the dog shake most out and o from there, but he doesn't like that much. I use the same spray for hot spots, and other of their products for cleaning.
I have 2 Dobe's and their ears need to be cleaned weekly. I have seen so many products out their any recomendations or something natural??
If you are not dealing with infections or stinkiness, remember not to overclean a dog's ear. Ear wax is protective. To go au natural all you need to gently clean is a few drops of olive oil or mineral oil on a cotton ball. This will gently soften and remove wax/dirt without being harsh or drying. That is as basic and natural as you can get I think.
I don't know if this is coincidence or not, but ever since we changed to a raw food diet (about a year ago) our Golden has never had any more gunky ears.
No more gunky ears, less poop, no "doggie odor", clean teeth, pleasant breath. . .
Wow, the benefits of feeding raw just keep mounting.
And couple that with the "no vaccination" position which is probably very prevalent among raw feeders, little wonder feeding
raw is not recommended by vets - it's killing their business!
