My 7-month old GSD lost his appetite and a lot of weight and energy in the 19 days he was on a raw diet. Figured he might have gotten worms and true enough I found 4 big, live ones when I gave him a dewormer...ewww! He's back on kibble now and recovering well...

Your dog lost weight due to worms...
...and now he's back on kibble to recover?

What were you feeding him?
I have a hard time believing that raw was is more of a risk than kibble regarding worms in any dog.
My Mal had tapeworms and I wormed her, continued raw and she is doing just fine.
I worm on a schedule (every four months) as a preventative and even did that on kibble since they would get worms then also.
I feed wild game (deer, elk, pheasant ect....)but I make sure I freeze it at sub zero for about a month before I feed it.
Also, I eat a medium rare to rare steak and I never get worms and that goes for the wild stuff also......(NOT poultry though...that is cooked through)

Do you think you could pinpoint the food that gave him worms and take it out of his diet instead?
I have not had one problem with raw feeding = worms with my dog. I have never fed fish other than canned mackerel and only bought human grade foods for my dogs.
I know worms are gross, but they can come from other sources. It is a shame to give up the raw from one bad experience, right Steve . I only say that because I know his dog Eich has had them.
Of course, it is totally your decision.
My two cents.

Are you aware of how dogs get roundworms, and that is has ZERO to do with food?
http://canismajor.com/dog/worms.html
"Big live" ones sounds like roundworms. You might want to see on the URL above where roundworms come from.
In fact, google them and look at ANY source. Food is not a factor.
You dog had roundworms and lost weight. You wormed him. His food had nothing to do with it.
This is something we have addressed on the forum three times in one week. It's startling how this misinformation keeps popping up.

The food did not give him roundworms.
QUOTE: Roundworms are active in the intestines of puppies, often causing a pot-bellied appearance and poor growth. The worms may be seen in vomit or stool; a severe infestation can cause death by intestinal blockage. ... This worm can grow to seven inches in length. Females can produce 200 thousand eggs in a day, eggs that are protected by a hard shell and can exist in the soil for years. Dogs become infected by ingesting worm eggs from contaminated soil. The eggs hatch in the intestine and the resulting larva are carried to the lungs by the bloodstream. END from CanisMajor.com, which agrees with all the vetmed worm pages.
Drop off a fecal sample at the vet's if you suspect roundworms. It's a simple test and a simple remedy, and it does *not* involve the diet.

Besides the fact that your dog did not pick up the worms from his food, I don't see why you think that kibble will help him "recover" from his worm problem.
If anything, kibble is much harder to digest than raw and is making your dog's digestive system work a lot more to extract the nutrients he needs. The kibble is more likely to irritate your dog's intestines than anything... I would put him back on raw.
And don't worry too much about it; roundworms are pretty harmless, they just absorb some of the nutrients as the food passes through the gut. Now that you wormed your pup, problem's over

Just wanted to clarify that I freeze my wild game due to tape worms.
Kidney, from what I have read in one of Billinghurst's book can possibly be a cause of tapes. Those white pockets that are sometimes on the kidney can harbor tapes. I freeze this also and cut the white parts out. When I get home tonight I will send the quotes out of the book.

You're correct about the less-common type of tapeworm (not the one dogs usually get). Dogs usually get tapeworms when they eat a flea that ate a tapeworm egg. There is another kind of tapeworm that dogs can get when they eat the organs of a rabbit that ate a tapeworm egg.
The "evidence" would then be tapeworm segments (which we have probably all seen pictures of) that look kind of like rice grains.
And there are other parasites possible from raw wild game, too.
Not what the O.P. described.
