I was feeding my dog an almost complete raw diet. I Kept him with a little Inova incase I was not able to feed him due to work, my fiancee could just pour him some Inova with out him getting sick, well latley I've been getting lazy and he now eats mostly Inova. I have noticed he does not have the wind he had. BTW he is a Mal. He is still very energetic (at first) but just runs hot fast. It's not worms cause I use alittle Ivermec monthly. I know Inova is very dense food and cutting back still didn't stop him from gaining alittle weight. He was nice and thin and now i can pinch an inch. I will be switching to raw (completly) today for good. I thaught I would let you guys know that my dogs performance dropped in case any green horns (like me) think even Inova can compare with raw foods.
No I was constantly adjusting the food Volume for the Innova. He is not fat. Our work outs are the same but now he just doesn't have the wind he used to. He will be 12 months next month or august I have to double check. My point is that with raw food it was easy to keep him slim and he had so much more wind. He doesn't quit when where working out/playing but he definatly gets winded/runs hot fast. The only thing i changed was the diet so thats why I'm singling out the Innova. I got the pup at 4 months of age and he was on a raw diet. I got lazy and noticed a differance in my boy. I'm switching back to raw for good now tho. Innova will be just for emergancys.
Not really. I noticed this about a month ago. So far the hotest average day we have had here has been about 77degres. I am from CT. I used to box and know alittle about conditioning. I researched K9 conditioning and also know alittle of that too.I use to show APBT's in conformation and I used to condition them for the show. My point of this is I have a little back round on K9 performance and with that I caught on to my boy running hot. If i didnt see how he was with the raw diet i would just think he's a bit out of shape, but thats not the case. I saw him on a raw diet and couldn't beleive how much natural wind he had.
It still might be the fat level in the food that is slowing him down a bit. Having too high a fat level when the weather is warmer can slow sled dogs down. Remove that "inch you can pinch" and lower the fat level in the food and you might see a change. Your raw diet might have been leaner if you were using a lot of lean muscle meat. Sprinting dogs diets are usually lower in fat that that of distance or endurance dogs. Just a thought.
With Innova there aren't many choices so you really cant reduce the fat in the diet. I am wheaning him onto the raw diet and within the next few weeks I will be monotoring his weight and try to bring him down 4 lbs.
My conclusion is correct. With no extra exercise (to rule out getting in shape) His wind is definatley better. Same temperature if not slightly hotter outside. His diet is now consisting of ground turky, beef liver,heart,tripe, chicken/turkey gizzards,back and necks,sardines,mackrel. I will be increasing the variaty of meat soon. This is just what I have started him on. It has only been 8 days. I want to also get some vitamin C pills for him.
