I do not have a German Shepherd but I do have an American Bulldog that I think would be a good candidate for protection training. I don't know anything about it. Someone suggested it, after seeing him. I would like to something so that he is working and happy. I'm also trying to find out more about flyball. He's 7 months old. I don't know what the requirements are? Does he have to have papers, etc? I rescued him recently from NABRA and he does NOT have papers, but he is most assuredly an AB. Thanks for all your input.
For Schutzhund the only requirements are that the dog have a stable temperament and be physically capable of doing the work. The AB people have a team they have fielded to the American Working Dog Federations's yearly Schutzhund championship. If I'm not mistaken, the dog with the highest tracking score a couple of years ago was on the American Bulldog team.
Thanks. Do you like this discussion board? Is it helpful? So far I find the people friendly (tee hee, your the only one I've talked to). I may stick around. It's helpful to have friends who are interested in the same things, and that I would be able to turn to for advice. Thanks so much for yours by the way. It will be really helpful. I'm going to follow your links this weekend.
This is a very interesting board, in my estimation. Several of the people on it are among the most recognized dog trainers in the United States, and a whole lot more are working dog enthusiasts in a variety of disciplines who don't mind sharing their expertise with others. I have been on quite a few other boards but usually I just lurk, because it's four or five people trying to make everyone else look dumb. That's not the case here--probably because NOBODY can make some of the folks here look dumb without looking awfully dumb themselves.
Ed Frawley, the list owner, is a very highly respected name in dog training and is especially well-known for breeding working German Shepherds and producing dog training videos. He also has answered thousands of training questions on his website.
There was a recent flap here, which you will probably uncover if you haven't already, involving several "plants" from a protection dog training facility that prides itself on its secret Nazi dog-training methods (I'm serious--they got these methods from an SS officer). Some of these people were kicked off the board, and good riddance. But the vast majority of people who participate here are ethical dog trainers, and I think you have a lot to benefit from the give-and-take on this board.
BTW I don't know anything about flyball, but there are people on this board who participate in it. Hopefully one of them will see this thread and give you a hand.
Thanks. I think I've found myself a new board then. It's not just dog training discussed though right? Can I ask questions about anything dog related? And are other things discussed here as well? Just want to be clear on the rules. I have a discussion board of my own (not about dogs) on a particular subject, but we talk about a lot of things on there.
