OK, now I'm a little worried. Leonidas (6 mos. old) threw up another sock this morning. That's two days in a row. I'm not sure when or how he got them. My husband is having some health problems which require me to be gone daily, so I have been trusting my kids (22,16,15) to help with watching him and crating him, and I know they aren't nearly as vigilant as me. Hopefully my being gone will end today and he will be back under my constant supervision. I know that won't always be the case though.
My question is, I have always known he has a weakness for socks and when I catch him with one I tell him firmly, "NO" and take them from him. Is there any way to make socks unappealing to him? Any aversion training methods that have worked for any of you, or do I just have to be ever watchful and try to retrain my children to not leave them on their floors? (the dog will be easier!)
Make sure that he has SOMETHING else to chew on. The drive to chew is very strong in dogs; you cannot overcome it easily. Far simpler and safer to provide something else (that, and make sure the socks stay in the hamper! )
Now, I realize that good training says that all toys belong to YOU. I don't believe this applies to nyla-bones and other "chewing outlets". These, it is my opinion, the dog needs to have unlimited access to. I'd MUCH rather him have a nyla that he can take everywhere than start to chew my shoes!
Each time one of our dogs goes to investigate something with the look of "Hrmm, that looks like it's good to chew", we make sure to toss his nyla between him and the object of his desire. If he keeps moving to the object, the nyla gets held in front of him. He either gets the nyla, or he has to keep dodging around with us waving the bone in his face. It gets funny at times!
Luck and best wishes for the health of your husband!

He has bully sticks all over the house. He loves them and I always give him one when I take something away. Sometimes it looks like a bully stick explosion happened in my house! I will buy him a nyla-bone, haven't tried that yet.
