I was just wondering if there are any other MWD Handlers on these forums? I am sure there is but don't know who you all are! so check in would love to talk to other MWD handlers and there experiences.

I was pretty fortunate in the MWD field. Started out as a 1 striper (it was Airman 3rd Class then) in 1966 and retired as the Superintendant of the Dog School in 1988. I worked in every course they have. Was Course Chief of Patrol, Drugs and Explosives. I'm still working in the career field with the Highway Patrol in Tennessee. I'm currently the Canine Trainer. There are three of us in the Canine Training with 43 dogs working. We start an explosives class October 1, 2007, five additional EDD's and a Patrol Dog class in February 08. I just graduated a 6 dog drug class. April of 09, I'll retire from this position, then I think I'll go to work mowing grass on a golf course.

I really do wish they would add a "trainers" school to the program. Not sure how it would be done but i have been to the "handlers" school and want to improve my self any way i can and on paper besides for finds and makeing sure i cert at 100% i really cant improve my self. I would like to call my self a trainer but i haven't been to any schools and all i am doing is handing out advice that for the most part gets ignored lol.

Join the club on that one. Wouldn't matter if you had 1 year or 100. You know the old saying; The only thing two dog trainers can agree on is, the third one is wrong.
Dog trainers are a funny lot. They'll discuss/argue/debate anything, but in the end, they'll use what is comfortable and what has been successful in the past. You'll also notice a lot of the arguments/debates, they say the same thing only used different words then argue about the meaning. Learning to train takes time, asking questions, soaking it up and putting it to use. That's how most of us learned. The end result is what's important, not how you get there.

lol cant say i have heard that one before.
Anyhow that is true i just wish there was a way i could further my self in the MWD world, i guess i just got to show everyone up!
But i am looking forward to the day i get out of the military and when i work with dogs my knowledge about dogs does make a difference to my working statis.
