Ted,
Invisible fences do work but some dogs will take the shock and blow through the fence going after someone or something. And beyond the obvious problem with that there is the small matter of your dog then being stuck on the outside of the fence unwilling to take the shock again to get back home.
I wouldn't trust it as my primary containment system...and not with a high-drive Mal.
I'm glad that you asked that question, as it was recently suggested to me that I consider one. I too would prefer a solid fence, but the expense and installation are big factors.
I'd like to use the invisible fence in conjunction with playing with our pup in the yard so that he isn't on leash or his tie-up, not for unsupervised play. (He doesn't play unsupervised anyway ... he either lays down, digs or chews when he is alone.)
I'd like the invisible fence idea however I have a large paved area adjacent to the road, and I'm not going to dig under pavement. Any other types of invisible fence ideas that don't require complete below ground installation?
I have never used either but was considering this for a backup when I am out with my pup (on a long lead) or later and only nominally paying attention if gardening or something.

Um, I hate to be a kill-joy but my neighbors have this system and their Aussie gets out of the yard ALL the time. It's not very effective from what I've seen.

well i guess i'll save up for some wood hahaha
Lumber IS frightfully expensive. We used a wire-mesh for fencing around our back yard. Cheaper than wood, easy to install, almost invisible, and the dog stays in (and deer stay out!). While it's not as beautiful as a wood fence it does the trick.
If your heart is set on wood you would be amazed how much cast-off lumber is out there and people eager to give it to you if you'll haul it away. Keep your eyes open for home remodels and construction sites...you'll be amazed at how much you can find to make a great wood fence.
I have heard too many stories of dogs taking the pain and running out of the area.
I have also heard stories from owners of dogs that claim their dogs know when the power is out or the batteries in the collar are getting weak. I guess the dogs don't feel a tingle as they approach the line.
The examples cited above are from people with just house pets, not working dogs. A true working dog may have better obedience than a pet, but then again the working dog will also be more driven to overcome the obstacle of momentary discomfort for the victory of reward.
I also did not go with invisible fence as even if it can keep the dog in, it won't keep children out. The last thing I need is for a kid to go running through my yard and kick in the dog's prey drive.
