Currently my dogs are on Innova Evo dry food, the one dog is doing great but the other is not doing as well on it. My younger gsd is still itching so I am looking into an elimantion type diet for her.
The only protein she has not been exposed to is rabbit, so I am wondering specifically about the rabbit formula:
Ingredients:
Rabbit, Water, Natural Flavors, Tricalcium Phosphate, Guar Gum, Seaweed Extract, Sea Salt, Vitamins/Minerals, Sodium Phosphate, Inulin, Sodium Ascorbate, Garlic, Choline Chloride, Potassium Chloride, Sunflower Oil, Herring Oil, Beta Carotene
Guaranteed Analysis %:
Moisture 78
Protein 9
Fat 7
Fiber 1
Extra Information:
Calories 37 Kcal/oz
Calories 1308 Kcal/Kg
Calories 489 KCals/13.2 oz. Can
Calories 204 KCals/5.5 oz. Can
She has been itching and biting for some time now and the vet's have no idea as to what it can be, so before going to a derm vet I am deciding to do an elimination diet just to rule things out (I know they will want me to anyway before seeing them). Her itching has gotten worse to the point I want to put an elizabethan (sp?) collar on her. She is also blowing her coat and is due for her estrus cycle in October.

I wonder if you are going in the wrong direction. If she is itching from chicken, beef and lamb based foods, the protein source may not be the problem. I would look into what is common between what you have tried. Could easily be one of the preservatives in the food. Just a suggestion.

Hi William,
She was previously on raw (when it all started) before switching to kibble, her main source of protein then was chicken so I switched her away from chicken based foods and the cycle has continued. I figure this may be the last resort for food based allergies (every vet thinks its food allergies), since it is a new protein. I'm also trying to keep it grain free, including soy products since some dogs are sensitive to it.

I use the canned food for some of my guys and they love it. The rabbit can be a little rich for some dogs at first (based on my dogs it was 50/50 split). After a couple of meals they get used to it and do OK.
Did you ever try her on raw rabbit? My girl loves it....if you can't stand the actual rabbit Bravo puts out a rabbit formula that has nothing in it other than rabbit. Just a thought.
Good luck with her.

I was thinking about raw rabbit at first, there is a place here in PA that will ship you frozen rabbit carcasses (I think it's PepsPoultry). The only problem is receiving the delivery so it doesn't spoil. This is still an option though that I am looking into.

Wow, thank you Amber, that's a great thread.
Weird thing is I actually give my older gsd about a 1/3 a cup a day of Stonyfield Whole Milk Yogurt and none to my younger gsd. I was only giving it to my older dog because she is picky about eating and the yogurt has helped her eat a bit quicker.
My older gsd used to have skin and coat problems that just went away completely. I thought it was the different brand of dog food I switched her to that helped, it may actually be the frequency/amount of the yogurt I give her now.
I'm in total shock and am definitely going to try this with my younger dog. Thanks again.

Can you keep us posted on your results? I think this is really promising stuff. I bumped the thread up too, so maybe Mike can give us an update as well.

If you are a kibble person Pro Plan makes an food with yogurt in it. I had a pitbull and a cocker spaniel. Both breeds are suseptible to skin problems. I took the preventative approach and fed that formula. They never had any skin problems. It is Pro Plan Sensitive stomach salmon with yogurt. It has pink writing on the bag. Just a thought.
