My Dutch Shepherd pup is growing at me when I pop him with the leash. I am using a standard collar, not a choke or prong. I only pop if he tries to eat something off the ground and won't drop it with "yuck" or if he tries to run away. I consulted with my breeder-trainer who said to put a e-collar on him so he didn't know where the correction was coming from. He is most definitely not a Bill Koehler type trainer. He said it is not too early for a e-collar if used properly. He stated if I got tough with the pup over growling I could start destroying some drive. I would like some other opinions.

My understanding of the eCollar is that it is important that the pup know where the correction is coming from.
If the dog is growling at you when you correct it, it sounds like he doesn't have a ton of respect for your authority. Or he could just be frustrated about being denied the yummy thing he wants on the ground. One of my dogs will bark at me when I warn him off of something. He does what I tell him to do the first time and with no hesitation, but he lets me know that he's not happy about it.
I think there are things you can do about this problem that are a lot more "holistic" (not in the medical sense) than using an ecollar to surprise the dog...I just don't see the benefit in it, and he still seems a bit young, but it depends on the dog.
Anyway, I'm certainly no expert. Take my thoughts with a grain of salt.

That's what I understood, too.

What about trying a prong? I am not a big fan of choke collars at all so I would not recommend those.
How old is the dog?
I do not think that you will destroy drive unless the corrections are totally unfair for the offense. The dog needs to learn respect for you.
I do use an e-collar on my Mal for the recall since she is very highly prey motivated, if it moves fast, she gets wound up wanting to go after it, however this is getting much better with maturity as well as making it REALLY fun for her to come back to me.
I use a "leave it" command and while teaching this I used a prong collar if needed, but mostly all it took was a firm "Leave-It" and a small pop with the collar and redirection to something else.

The pup is 4 mo. and a cousin to Mal's. He is very hard. He will take treats after any correction. He is 28 lbs. If a e-collar is OK I prefer to a prong. This pup will chase anything that moves.

Lee, do you do any groundwork with the puppy? What is his way of living with you? I think an e-collar is too much for a 4 mo old pup. Even a prong shouldn't be used until 6 mos, more or less.. IMO

I tend to agree with Alex although there are exceptions to every rule.
However, at four months, I would go back to basics and try to rebuild. Work on a totally "out of this world, my handler is better than anything" approach and keep him on a long line.
Make sure that everything the pup does is because you allow it.
I would not start putting heavy correction on a pup like this due to the fact that he is just a pup and you should let him be a pup .
My Mal and my Dutch are both pretty hard so I feel for you and am speaking from making mistakes and having to work hard to correct my own faults.

Yup, and as Carol said, I'd do the prong before an e-collar. I bought an e-collar for my dog and have really not used it much. She is 19 mos old now, but I did so much work on the long line and prong, using an e-collar really isn't necessary - for her.
If your dog is a very hard dog, an e-collar will really help, but I'd wait until he's past 10 mos for that.

I believe I've done the basics pretty descent. I've owned import working GSD's & Rott's for 35 years. He is a different "breed of cat". He is crate broken and I am the center of his world. He is with me almost 24-7. He does all the basics- sit, down, etc. He is happy and very outgoing. I intend to do Schutzund with him. Willie Pope a Schutzhund judge and head of our local club has temperament tested him and says he can do the job so far. He is definitely not a kennel dog. The only one in the family that pets or plays with him is my 5 year old son. (Please don't start doing the arithmetic to that one) He only is with him in my presence.
