I have two Gsd's that are outside dogs almost all the time. In the summer when it's warm I end up with a fly strike problem that results in the tips of their ears being bitten by the flys. I clean up daily (pick up and rinse down)and bleach their kennels about 2-3 times a week. I put "swat" on their ears but it seems like they still end up with fly strike. I noticed that one of them has it worse than the other. Are there any suggestions out there as to how to fix this problem short of making them all indoor dogs.
I use a lawn spraying service that keeps the bugs etc completely away from the yard. The grass is so much nicer and the bugs are almost nonexistent. Just be sure to keep the dogs off the grass for the recommended time after spraying.
I had some of those water misters on the top of the Kennel with a timer to run from 3 to 6 when our dogs were out more. I didnt get them for that but it seemed to keep the flys away.

Howard, I could use something like that. Is it something I can apply myself and do you know what product is used?
I had the same problem. It got to the point where my dog's ear was bleeding. I found that I had to keep the kennel super clean. I also put some ointment on her ear so the flies would not bite it so it could heal. I clean my kennel every other day. I read on the net they were "blood flies". I also sprayed her down with apple cider vinegar.I have concrete paver floors, what flooring do you have?
We started with a service that said they used organics but it didn't work that well. Now we just use Tru-Green lawn service. They put down different chemicals each time because of the time of year. I don't know what exactly they use. I guess I should ask but I've been happy so I just go with it.
