My boy is almost 9 months and we started on the bike today. Easier for me as I take 3 dogs out all seperately. We went at almost the same pace as we do walking with him on a long line. Is he developed enough for this? I will take it very easy but also am wanting to work on his stamina. On a funny note we tried rollerblades yesturday but only got one block and the wheels fell apart. 'needless to say they have not been used in a while!LOL
I would not do any biking or running with a puppy until his joints have closed. I generally wait till they are int the 12-18 months range but I am also very conservative. Building stamina in a puppy? LOL, I usually have to build my own stamina to keep up with the puppy/adolescent dogs :-p
I just had a conversation about this same topic with my vet yesterday...he confirms, no running for a pup (especially on concrete) until about 12 to 18 months...Letting the pup decide when he wants to run (or stop) like playing fetch is the way to go, or like was mentioned, swimming.
I didn't ask how to gage 12 months to 18 months??? That's quite a spread of time to guesstimate. Maybe someone here can answer that?
IMO, getting the pup used to the bike by walking him as you ride slow is awesome, as he will be good and prepped by the time you are ready to get going.
