Hi, my GSD pup is now 12 weeks old. We have been going on morning and evening walks. She does very well on a flat colar and leash. However she goes back and forth, from left to right, front to back when walking. Is this a "Herding" thing? Should I try to correct this or is this a normal thing? Another question I have (which I have posted before) is that she has this little whine. I was told previously that she might be sensing my tension or stress which might have been true in the beginning, but now we kind of have a routine down, and im very calm. We go to her favorite places for playing and walking and she seems to be having fun/Happy. So, why does she do that little whine thing? Is she scared? Tired? Just courious, Thanks ~ SBS
I walk Starbuck on a 25 foot Retractable Leash, she will go everywhere and anywhere she can reach to explore and sniff around. It sounds like she is doing the same thing on a much shorter leash.
I’m not working on “Heel” yet, but I do give her a “No Pull” or “Easy” when she is at the end of the line. I don’t think I’ve seen an age when people start on the “Heel” command.
Could the whine be a sign of excitement to play? I’ve caught Starbuck doing it a couple times if I don’t throw the ball fast enough for her. Keep an eye on exactly when she does it.
it's normal puppy behavior to move around from side to side, back and forth when walking on a leash... it's the "ooh, what's this over here? wait, what's this smell over here? hey, i think that leaf just moved, i'd better check it out!" mentality
personally, i discourage this while walking and start teaching pups from the beginning to stick to one side (i'm clumsy enough already, i don't need the extra challenge). I do allow for frequent breaks during walks with puppies so that they get to explore and exercise the senses.
as far as the whining... welcome the the life of a GSD lover!
they're talkers! As your pup grows and you really get to know her, you may learn to translate her whines as i have with my guys (they each have their own excited, worried, bored, etc. whine)
Ditto what Kacie said. Cute puppies going back and forth - except for when you're looking straight ahead and step on them or try to avoid them and end up on your butt.
Talk, talk, talk...boy can they talk. "Where's my food, where's my treat, I want to go outside, let's go play, I'm bored, someone just walked outside, I heard the neighbor's car door shut, let's go check it out, hurry it's urgent, there's a bird in my yard, I'm too excited to sit still"....yep, talk, talk, talk.
