My 2 Y.O. GSD goes crazy at the fence in the evenings.
It is a chain link fence. The moment I open the door to let her outside, she bolts to the same place on the fence, starts barking, scratching almost violently at the ground, or jumping on the fence for no apparent reason.
There is nothing there. I have walked on both sides of the fence looking for a frog, snake, etc.
This behavior has been going on for months.
What is she seeing that I'm not?
Always looking for training avenues close to home. Any suggestions?
My place backs up to a canal with woods on the other side. I get a regular parade of possums and raccoons at night. In one spot of the fence you can see where the animals are using it to scoot under. Maybe you have the same problem. Even though the animal is no longer there, the odor is if they go by at night. Just a suggestion on what might be happening. Does your Rotti do the same thing?

Reason I ask about exercise is because my Mal and my hound will do this and other wierd things when they are not getting enough.
I am down sick right now and have been for three weeks now (was just tested for WNV), and I try to keep up on their exercise. I had to bring in a person to help me with this.
I did work them all over the last few days since I felt okay and they are working fine, however, without the exercise as well, they start to entertain themselves.
But I do agree that there is possibly an animal or three wandering through as well.......

My GSD dog did the same thing only in the morning when it was still dark. I placed a 10 foot lead on the dog and let it go while holding onto the lead. That was the last time I had any problems, from that day the dog has never charged the fence.
The dog gets a good amount of exercise, jogging 4 miles with me a few days a week even in the hot & humid Florida summer. She and the Rottie playing together when the sun starts to go down also gives her a workout.
There were animals going through that area months ago. I trapped several opposums and a racoon. I see no evidence of anything big now for months, although I sometime see a snake, turtle or mouse back there. I would think that the torrential rains we had a while ago would have washed the scent away.
No neighboring dogs come by the yard.
The Rottie does not express an interest back there. The GSD will come when I call her or she hears me open the door, but otherwise she runs the fence all night and goes crazy at the one corner. When I yell "Enough" at her she'll quiet down, but she does not listen as well to my wife. On the nights I'm not home she ends up with the bark collar on.
