I feed a natural diet and would like to add wild waterfowl and wild game (Rabbit, Deer, Squirrel and Ground Hog) I have read not to feed beaver because of Giardia or something like that. I'm also concerned about the West Nile Virus in wild waterfowl. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
He who has never tasted soap has never bathed a dog
I have been feeding beaver(raw) for years without any giardia problems. If you are worried about giardia don't feed the entrails, just the meat and bone. Beaver is kind of rich and I only feed it in the winter. Dogs love it above all else.
Nice part is if you have trappers in your area you can usually get the carcasses for free.
Just curious: How do you feed this animals to the dog. Do you let'em have the whole animal? Do you feed it raw? I've never fed my dogs like this. Is there an advantage?
I just axe them up into chunks if they are frozen carcasses and if they are not frozen I carve it into pieces with a knife. I usually get trapped beaver so there is no fur on but have gotten nuisance beavers that have fur on and just cut them up fur and all and the dogs don't mind - it actually pads the bits of bone and stuff through the dogs innards. The only piece that the dogs don't like is the musk gland and some dogs don't like the stomach contents(chewed up bark) and will eat the stomach from around it and leave a pile of bark. Chickens I feed frozen- feathers and all, the dogs will pluck most of the bigger chunks of feathers and the rest don't cause any porblem. I have never fed groundhog as I never get hold of any but my girlfriend shoots them in her garden and feeds them to her dogs and says they are fine. One of my old dogs thought her purpose on earth was to kill all groundhogs and she did fine on them, too. Another girlfriend fed mink and that was good too as long as you gut off the heads(full of sharp teeth -you should cut off the heads even if you grind it). I think what you feed wild may depend on the area of the country you are in and what parasites etc youhave to deal with. I never feed wild fowl to the dogs as I am usually interested in steering that towards my freezer! Partridge to the dogs?- not a chance!
