Okay, just a general question. My dog is 11 months old and weighs 75 pounds. I'm telling you he looks skinny. Kind of like an adolescent kid that has grown up so fast that he is just long and lanky. The vet says he is okay but I am still questioning. Is this an average weight for a male gsd at this age?
OMGosh! Thank you so much for saying "klutz"! He is so retarded sometimes. He hates walking on anything slippery in the first place but heaven forbid he be excited because the dog can't walk w/o slipping! It's like his legs are too long for him to control sometimes. Anyhow, if I measured him right, he is 26 inches tall at the shoulder. The pic I am posting is of him laying down which really doesn't show you how skinny he looks behind the ribs. You can feel his spine and his ribs but not really SEE them which my vet says is perfect. He says most dogs in America are seriously overweight and the only reason I think he is skinny is because all I ever see is fat dogs, lol.
Sounds right to me, too. It's amazing how weight varies within the breed. My older GSD is 27 inches tall and only 69 lbs, but she is very narrow. On the other hand, my 1.5 yr old is 24 inches tall and weighs 65 lbs...she is built like a brick house! Seeing the two of them together you would never guess that they have only 5 lbs difference between them.
Cassandra 1 and a half years, is about 25 inches and a trim 75 pounds, when she comes out of the water i wonder where did my dog go! She looks so skinny I'd be alarmed if I didn't know her weight.
Levi looks good, he'll start building muscle mass from now on.
Looks great and sounds great. He is just about the same size my Thor was at that age 25 inches and 72lbs. It took him until 3 to reach his full size which was 26 inches and 94lbs. My vet was thrilled with his rate of growth. She said a lot of skeletal issues come from too fast growth as a puppy.
Alas, now at 8 years she would like his weight to come down for the same reason, less stress on his bone structure and major organs as he enters his senior years. Has anyone else heard this? Current weight 92 (he's already lost 2) goal weight 88....does that sound right?
Thanks for posting Robbin since I had the same question but from the other end of the age scale.
