My name is Kevin Sheldahl and I live in the Albuquerque area in New Mexico.
Some may have seen me on Ed's videos as we've known each other for quite a few years.
My dog background is really quite varied starting back in the very early 80's doing personal protection training with Bouviers. I quickly turned to dog sports such as schutzhund and a bit of French Ring. I had a career as a respiratory therapist at the time and enjoyed the work as a hobby. As many of us do I saw that my interest in my career field was slipping. I had been working with a nuber of people doing some police dog training and had even worked at a large training facility dedicated to police and detection dogs.
It sparked my interest and eventually I found myself being asked to train with local departments and some from the midwest. I had become a reserve deputy in a couple departments and decided to pursue a career in law enforcement. I was quickly tapped to handle a dog and the all the handler/dog training for my department and some neighboring departments which I still do.
I compete occasionally in dog sports although my passion is with service dogs of all types, detection, patrol, tracking, S&R. I currently handle a GSD which is a patrol and explosive detection dog I also have titled him to SchHII. The patrol dog just prior to this one is retired and sleeping here in my office he was also a GSD and titled to SchHIII, FH,WPO, DPOII, PSP-1. I had the privledge of representing the US in Germany twice with him at the DM.
My current interests in dogs are leaning towards Mondio-Ring while I help some club members compete. I would like to complete a SchHIII and FH w/ my current dog and I still work with numerous departments to help them develope dogs and handlers via teaching basic hanlder courses and helpinbg problem solve.
I also occasionally do seminars ranging from detector work to tactical use of police service dogs.
What will I do in the future?? Not sure. I hope to keep playing withh dogs for many years and in fact seem to keep taking on more and more in the dog work. I think I am finally starting to get it
