Marty, cheap and useless as it sounds, you have my DEEP sympathy. These spots of light and joy called "dogs" capture us like little else can.
That being said, there are some vet techs and amateur drug researchers here, so you may get some information from them.
Though, from what I know, Frontline and any of the other topical flea treatments should not be applied to a pup younger than four months.

I am so sorry to hear about your pup.
I am in agreement with Jim. Sounds as though too much at once as far as vaccinations, wormer and Frontline all in one visit.
Not saying that is the cause of what happened, but the vet should have known better to use Frontline on a pup that young.

I, too, am very sorry about your pup, Marty.
Just to clear up the Frontline question: Frontline can be given to pups 8 weeks or older. From what the Merial rep said to me, you'd have to give something like 5x the recommended dosage to see a toxic, fatal reaction in a puppy.
I believe I've read that vaccines reactions can show up weeks after the injection??

Sarah, not to pick on you, but the MERIAL REP???? How biased is THAT person?!? Not to mention that it's rep, probably only told what the superiors want them to know.
I have an epileptic dog, and it is well-known that topical flea/tick meds DO cause seizures, so it could well have been the frontline.
WTF was this vet doing???? Vaccines PLUS Frontline? On a ten week old??? I'd like to cause him seizures.
Marty, I would absolutely report what happened as possible vaccinosis, and give lot numbers for what Smoke was given. Oh, and give the vet hell.

Marty,
I'm very sorry to hear about your pup. I think we all find it heart-wrenching to lose our pets at any age, whether 10 wks or 10 yrs. Your instincts about your vet's opinion are probably right, but you may never know the true cause. I'm not trying to challenge Sarah when I say I wouldn't put a lot of stock in the opinion of a manufacturer's rep. He may even be right (doubtful), but if there's just one exception - your pup - it can lead to painful results.
Hopefully, all the valuable information on this site and the many posts from very knowledgeable and experienced forums members will serve you well in the future.

Marty,
This was not your fault in any way. You did what you were "supposed" to do for your puppy by taking him to the vet.
I agree with the folks who maintain that the vet did far too much all at once to the puppy, but that wasn't your fault either. You trusted your vet.
But you can know that your puppy's death can be a signal and an opportunity to you to report this:
http://www.leerburg.com/vaccinosis.htm#fda
and read this:
http://www.leerburg.com/vaccinosis.htm
and to change vets, being certain to explain why, and perhaps supplying the vet with some printed out vaccinosis material. (See the link above.)
This is how we all learn: We see the vet or someone else do something that doesn't seem right to us and we go look it up and find out that many many others are questioning the same thing. It's that way with the crap in a bag kibble at the vet's office, too.
This link will explain why many people who do vaccinate, declining unnecessary or inappropriate vaccines, now do not recommend all the vaccinations your vet gave.

I am so sorry this happened. I'm so glad you made the choice to PTS and not let him suffer.
Smoke can be the reason for your new-found research and for the better knowledge you will have for your future puppy.

Marty, I too, like others here am so, so sorry you are going through this...losing your pup...I feel sad for you.
FWIW. My vet (allopathic) did tell me...confirmed what Ed has written about here on this site, that it is not a matter of IF a dog (pup) will have a reaction to vaccines, but WHEN. I don't know what your vet is talking about 2 days crap.
Prayers for you today.
