I did a search but wasn't able to come up with much that was relavent...
Is it OK to give my puppy rawhide chews? She likes them and will spend quite a bit of time chewing on one, and eventually eating it. She seems to be able to digest the rawhide with no problem and her stools are fine.
BTW, I switched to Canidae and she and I both like it.(no, I don't eat it ..her stools are smaller!) (yeah, I know, why not switch to raw?! I'm considering it...)

Lynne,
I would not give rawhide. It is pretty much a bad thing and can cause all kinds of problems, including intestinal blockage. It does not break down and the dogs cannot digest it. So bigger pieces that are swallowed can become lodged and may need to be surgically removed or worse, they can lead to death in your dog.
I give frozen kongs filled with peanut butter or cream cheese with a bit of kibble mixed in it.
Bully Stix and raw recreational bones (knuckle bones) are both great as well and are used here at my house.
I also have two dogs that love to chew and squish the Orbee Balls, and the Good Cuz toys.
Until The Tale of the Lioness is told, the Story will Always Glorfy the Hunter
I foster for a breed rescue. One of the rules the organization has is that I cannot give my fosters any rawhide products. Reason: they are cured in arsenic.
I give them smoked cow bones, rubber dog toys and stuffed animals (though those don't last long!)
Thanks for the replies...I'll lay off the rawhide and try the knuckle bones. We already do a Kong with a bit of kibble and cream cheese or peanutbutter...
My Pup loves the Rawhide Chews, BUT he swallowed very large pieces whole. Fortunately he vomited back up and there was no blockage. After I realized what it was he was vomitting, I threw them all away.
Now in addition to that, I have learned that there are all kinds of other bad things about them too.
I now buy him soup bones or give him frozen cream cheese or ice cubes or frozen chicken broth ice cubes.
Bayley loves raw marrow bones. I stopped giving her rawhide when I switched her to raw food. I give them frozen and it doesn't take her long to get the marrow out and them she gnaws on the bones. Heck of alot cheaper, I can buy alot of marrow bones for the cost of one rawhide bone.
Careful with marrow bones. If your dog bites down hard to try and crack the bone, he can end up with a cracked tooth because the bone is incredibly thick, dense and hard. Which would not only possibly be painful but would be terribly expensive to fix.
