Couldn't locate a better place to post this, so I put it here. Hope it's ok.
I have a male 1 year old lab. I clean his ears maybe twice a month, and I apply that flush liquid they sell. Well, he doesn't like it. Apparently it itches because he has no problem when I clean his ears with a cotton ball.
Problem is, when I use the flush, he lets me do one ear, but when I'm about to do the second one he shows his teeth. I'm not sure whether I should correct him or ignore it so that he doesn't associate the ear cleaning experience with a correction.
I'm sure he won't bite me, but he shows his teeth and gives me a hard time to clean his other ear. I end up using a little force to be able to get him to stay still.

First, yes that needs to be corrected.
Second, is there a reason he needs his ears cleaned twice a month?
Reason being, too much cleaning without a medically necessary reason, can remove the protective wax coating that dogs actually need to keep dirt, dust and other stuff out.
I clean my dogs ears every month and a half to two months. Depends on how dirty they are.......

Oh, I forgot to add this.....too much cleaning will also dry the ear out causing itching and irritation to the dog as well.

Ok. I clean them once every month and a half. No specific reason, he just swims a lot and I clean them if they get a little stinky.
I did this yesterday. When he showed his teeth, I said tsssst and hit him in the neck like Cesar Millan does in his show. I'm sure if I put a prong and correct him for doing this, he may not even know why I'm correcting him.

I am sure someone who is better at explaining how to correct for this behavior will jump in here......
I know what I would do, I just am not sure how to explain it in type......without confusing you......

You hit your dog?!!! AS A CORRECTION?!!! And you wonder if he can connect a collar correction. I'm not wondering where the problem is.
If my dog isn't learning, I'm doing something wrong

When he showed his teeth, I said tsssst and hit him in the neck like Cesar Millan does in his show.
I did not read this as he hit his dog, but rather he applied pressure to the dogs neck with an open hand, resembling what another dog might do when establishing pack structure......if anyone has seen Cesar's show, they will know what this type of "correction" is. I think using the word "hit" was just a figure of speech, maybe not the best word to use, but meant totally different than what it sounded like. I truly do not believe he hit his dog in the sense this was taken.

You will get answers....
Have you tried positive reinforcement? RE: Treating while the dog is being calm and patient while having his ears done?
Or, you can clean one ear, give him a break for a while and then clean the other one.....
It is always the same ear when he shows his teeth? If so, you may want to have it checked for an infection.
