I started feeding Cassie on a raw diet about a month ago. I started out with some chicken wings (this is the best I can find at our commissary, no necks or backs). She loved it, chowed down, and then the next morning she pooped and I was all excited because it was normal...but then the last half was soup. She was sick for maybe 24 hours, I kept feeding the wings, and then she was fine.
But any time I try to add anything new, she gets sick. I get woken up at 3 AM to go out, and its very nasty. I've tried adding vegetables, eggs, and last night I only added a chicken heart to her wings and she was sick this morning.
So my question is, should I just stick with the wings, or should I keep mixing it up and putting up with the mess?
When she's on wings, she's perfect, nice and hard poo, hardly any smell, it's great, so I am thinking that this is what is ideal. I also need to put a few pounds on her. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I don't know if there is any correlation, but I had the same experience w/ one of my dogs and more than a year later she was discovered to have EPI, the pancreatic insufficiany that inhibits digestion.
Perhaps a blood test could rule this out as one possible cause.
Another problem could be food allergies. Another one of my dogs is allergic to chicken, oats, wheat, duck, pork etc..I just found this out last month, he is not yet 2 and had on and off diarreah in his earlier years with various raw stuff. I did a full(expensive ) allery panel( blood workup) and found all of the things he is allergic too and was shocked!!
He can have venison, which is good, since i have a freezer full!!

You may be adding too much too soon. In addition, try adding one thing at a time, so if there is a bad reaction, you can figure out what is causing it. For my dogs, it turns out that they are allergic to beef and one of them is allergic to egg. By the way, if you feed your dog canned pumpkin, it can help control the runs.
Also it is sometimes a sign that you are overfeeding your dog if the poop starts normal and ends really soft. This happened with one of my dogs and cut back her proportions just a little and now it is just fine.
My dogs mainly just eat chicken and some vegatables. I also give them various supplements. Occasionally, I give them lamb and some fruit. I don't mess around with too much else at that simple combination seems to keep the poop regular.

If she had EPI, would she just get sick for no reason? She normally has no problem, it's just when I change something around or she eats something she shouldn't that she gets sick. Also, I have been adding one thing at a time...first it was just the chicken wings, like I said, sick for a day and then no problem. Then I added an egg, sick for a day or two but now she can tolerate it daily. Then I gradually added the supplements. I tried to add a chicken heart one week and then some veggies the next with the same result, but I haven't had the heart to try again yet...having to get dressed and walk the dog at 3 AM is getting very old!

Well, Meghan, IF she had EPI, she WOULD be getting sick for a reason, that being the inability to properly digest foods.
I was simply advising you that the symptoms of my dog were soooo subtle that it wasn't detected at all until she started heavy duty training for her PD certification and she dropped weight. I instantly thought of my earlier experiences w/ my dog as I read your post. I would just mention it to your vet, and as I said, a simple blood test can rule it out as a possible cause of your dogs issues.
Also, I seem to recall that you had hopes of breeding this dog? If so, you really want to be sure that EPI is not the cause, as it is a hereditary disease and the dog must not be bred if she has it.
So, I would say better to err on the side of caution and check it out. Hopefully that will not be the problem, and you can move on and eliminate the next possible cause, such as allergies to foods.
Good Luck! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I'll be sure to ask the vet to do a blood test the next time I'm at the vet...should be next month sometime, I have to take my kitten in to get neutered, but what exactly do I need to ask for? The vets here are pretty clueluess, will they know if I ask about EPI?
I didn't mean NO cause whatsoever, I knew a little about the disease and was reading some more today. I just meant outside causes like changes of food or stress or anything like that.
Anyway, thanks for the heads up, I'll let you know how it turns out once I get the bloodwork done.

You will want to ask for a TLI test. It stands for trypsin like immunity. A low number is bad, but I think it has to be in the 1 to 3 range to be EPI. Not sure about that, but the lab results will have a range on them.

Hi Meghan, You're right the 3a.m. does get old in a hurry. One of mine did the same thing until I added probiotic powder to her food. You can order it from bnaturals.com. It worked wonders for Evita. I have been feeding raw for about a year with no more problems!
Good luck and Merry Christmas!

Hey Debbie... Did it work even when Evita ate the infamous 'slippers'?
