I think I am probably in the minority here but does anyone else NOT like using these tools? The triggered response in the dog is what bothers me. IMO it looks like the dog goes into a fright then flight mode. It is quite effective in stopping annoying behavior but I am much more comfortable with using management (ah, in a perfect world) or a long line leash correction. I feel like I am being under handed with the surprise tactics. Thoughts?

Well, I tend to agree that using them is not the greatest idea.
My hounds would definitely be spooked by the noise of it and I am not into surprise noisy corrections.
But with the Mal, Dutch, Lab and GSD....well, they would see it as a "Ooooh FUN, I want that" game and probably launch at me to get it.....

I'm old and started long before e-collars were anything more than a wire leading to the coil on a car (but that's another story). I've used throw-chains, cans with pennies, mouse traps and my once famous silver dollar. I couldn't tell you the number of hours wasted while students searched for my silver dollar after throwing at a dog that wouldn't come off the sleeve. Like all tools, they have their place, although with the advent of electronics, I don't use a lot of them any more.

I have to ask what is "the once famous silver dollar" ? BTW age is only a number or at least that's what I keep telling myself :0)

LOL! I can relate. I used a shake can to stop Thor from leaping over the couch onto the picture window to squirrel hunt. It did work. He came flying back to grab the can and kill it...he was a tad prey driven. I'm thinking an e-collar would have probably been an excellent tool on him. But then again, look at all the fun I would have missed out on. It may have taken 7 years but he really is a pleasure to be around.

Ahh yes the famous silver dollar. It's really kind of silly. I was fairly accurate with it. I'd use it like someone would use a throw chain, only I'd hit the dog with it. If a dog wouldn't release from a long bite (distance) or continued toward the bite instead of recalling, I'd simply throw the dollar. It was usually enough to get the dog's attention, back to the handler's commands. The same dollar was used on literally hundreds of dogs when I was an instructor at the DOD Dog School. I still have it. It was a 1923 Peace Dollar, but it's so bent, scratch and nicked, it's barely recognizable.

David,
You must have been a meanie of an instructor to make the students look for that coin. I would have had the dogs do an article search and cut the down time by 90%. :-)

Yeah you are right my Mal goes all bonkers when I used to use the shake can. Maybe because I upgraded to a Heineken beer can and it reminded her of her long lost Dutchie friends!
Yeah I found the can was attention getting .. almost to much attention, I used it very sparingly after seeing the "Hi how ya doing" game face on the dog. I then just used it to redirect, but it always seemed that I didn't have my empty Heinie Can in the right place at the right time. It was just as appropriate to give the famous AAAHaHH or Fooey, to me that had the desired effect for my dog without making her silly.

I agree with every body here,
Maybe these kind for tools work for some dogs, but not with any working line dog in my memory. Works great for attention, then it's oooh the can, I want the can, I want the can, give me the can. No pooch, you can't have the can. The can, the can, give me the can. Now the dog is so wound it doesn't know what to do. Click, the stupid dog switch goes off. All in the space of about 15 or 20 seconds. And don't even think about leaving the can where the animal can get ahold of them while your not looking, ever see the mouth of a dog after shredding an aluminum can? If your dog gets to wound over the can and coin stuff, use the coins in the parking meters, and recycle the can.
Puppy hell will be nothing but fond memories before you know it, enjoy them while you can.
If my dog isn't learning, I'm doing something wrong.
