Just need a suggestion here. I measured Bayley's neck, up high where the prong is supposed to fit. So I get 14", I'm looking at the prong with the quick release snap so I can get it on without too much trouble. I'm thinking I should go with the medium size?
Another good thing about the quick release snap is that it can be sized more precisely than the ones without the quick release - you just close the snap along the length of the chain where it fits the best.
Another bad thing about the quick release snap is that I have seen the snaps fail, and it really sucks because they usually fail when you really dont want them to. This scissor type quick release is the one im talking about, I know Herm Sprenger also has another type thats like a leash snap, it might be better.
I've been looking at both, the leash snap type seems a bit big...it doesn't help when your dog has a 'chicken neck' I figure I'll jsut use the dd collar with it. Somehow I don't think I'll need to be giving any hard corrections. She's not a hard dog or really soft. Somewhere in the middle!
Keith,
Most GSD's use approx. 6-7 links total. However I don't know if your prong is the type that links together or clips on which will make a difference. The kind that clips on you can't get away with removing as many links because there isn't as many to start with. The chain and the clip seem to make up some of the space unlike the kind that links together. How old is your pup now? In time I'm sure it will fit correctly. You might start with a smaller link collar and one that links together, and that should solve your problem.
She is about 7.5 months old. I purchased the Herm X-Large (no quick disconnect).
I let her wear the collar on our walk to the mailbox. See seems a little distracted by the noise it makes. I plan to have her wear the collar for some time before I actually connect it. I also have an E-Collar and I want to pickup a large leather flat collar. I’ll alternate the collars for a couple weeks before I start training with them.
I think there is a fair chance I won’t even use the prong collar for training. She responds well to the flat collar and I plan to use the E-Collar for the off leash work.
See seems a little distracted by the noise it makes.
Not sure why it's noisy. Sounds like it may be too loose? The prong should be fit very high in the neck area and should be tight. Shouldn't make any noises unless the dog shakes his head.
It may be just a little loose. I think most of the noise was the two rings and the chain. I had the leash attached to her flat collar, the prong was just on there to get her used to it.
