KNPV is a great sport for a foundation in useful scenarios for real police work (since it was originally designed as a police sport). I especially like the suspect transport exercise, where the decoy drops a small item that the dog must catch in his front teeth and bring to the handler.
I’m not exactly sure KNPV enthusiast, at least in Holland, would want it to be called “sport” it’s more serious to them than merely “a sport". For that I give them an “old time salute”
In my opinion, KNPV is the closest thing to untapping the true potentials of a protection dogs. Only the ones with nerves of steel, clear heads, rock solid temperaments, and the unfainted- hearted can excel. An outsider might view the KNPV as an extreme and violent. To me it's a necessity. To "Them" it could be an unfair process (call it Natural Selection if you wish) to weed out the "weakest Link". To the rest of us it is a survival: to salvage the GSD breed, from the systematic misbreeding that took place for well more 2 decades when Show line enthusiasts controlled the SV. An era that had led to altering the breed standers, testing standers, hence breed capabilities.
In fact, the old Schutzhund trials looked very much the same like the KNPV. What happened? Examine the history of SV.
it's a shame that few GSDs are involved in the KNPV...but there are good ones out there...thank the Dutch for that.
Excuse the “rubbing-it-to the ground”…at least “here” I can speak my mind ….away form the wife
