my pup has a normal diet and is fine in every way. lately he has an on-and-off bout with diahrrea for almost 2 weeks. the vet gave metronydozol and it worked for a bit, but stool was pudding like again after 3 days of the meds. is this because my pup likes to pick up stuff off the ground?? he tends to pick up old dog fur that is laying in the yard. it ranges fro old dog fur, leaves, sticks, rocks... when I trade for a treat he drops it quick.
???

Also, have you had a fecal analysis done lately?

just got back from the vet. I wanted to do THK, but the vet wants me to feed Royal Canin because it doesnt have allergins. they are trying to eliminate the possibilities of a food allergy. Im no vet but Im almost positive thats not the case. they sent me home with albon and granules to eliminate parasites or worms. the fecal analysis will be done later because I had no stool sample and it was hard to get a sample fro his rectum. Im irritated and tired of paying hundreds of dollars and getting the same results. <sigh>

We have been feeding Starbuck the Canidae All Life Stages food since 7 weeks.
http://www.canidae.com/
Looks like there are 3 places in Hawaii that sell the food or you can order it on the net.
Don't change the puppy food if you don't need to, it can lead to an upset stomach. Starbuck has been on this same food since she was weaned.
She would also eat just about anything that would fit in her mouth outside. When she had a loose stool I would put canned Pumpkin Filling in with her dog food. He helps with loose stool and it also helps with constipation.
Eventually she stopped eating stuff every time I let her outside. But I did just take a dirt clod away from her.
We also give her a high quality supplemental vitamin and The Missing Link (with Omega 3)

This web site reviews dry dog food. It was discussed somewhere else on the web site:

I feel your pain on the vet bills, my last shepherd had Epilepsy and she ran up about $2,000 in vet bills the first year.

Ive read that site about the foodanalysis. the vet wants me to stick with Royal canin for 10-12 weeks, and X out all treats and extras. that'll suck because he'll be 6 months at the end of this trail and have a seemingly boring puppyhood food wise. I feel bad for him. my gut instinct is telling me to switch up to THK as soon as his stool gets harder... I dont know though....

Keep in mind that when you switch foods, especially different brands of kibble, that the dog is going to have runny stools for about a week. If that is the cause of the loose stools worming, metrodiazanole, albon, etc, etc, are not going to fix the loose stool. The drugs typically used to treat loose stools will also take several days to completely eliminate pathogens if they are the problem.
Have you settled on a food yet? How long since you switched?
Are you giving him large quantities of treats and rotating them (so he doesn't "have a boring puppyhood food wise") which will cause the loose stools?
If you have recently wormed him using the same wormer is probably not going to fix it, and worming too often can also cause loose stools.
If a dog has loose stools the things I suspect are: 1) worms, 2)giardia, 3)coccidia, after I have eliminated those possibilities I would move on to: 1) reaction to a disgusting non-food item that has been consumed, 2) allergies.

Yeah, eating stuff is a big problem for me too. Sticks and plants and dirt/sand. I have him out in our little yard with me while I garden and I think he's just laying there, but he's always chomping on something. When I let him out at night late I don't go with him, and he comes back in with dirt or sand on his nose. He was really sick 2 weeks ago and had to go on iv, but it looked like he ate some fabric or something. Again, barfing sticks at 5 am.
I've been putting him in his crate more during the day to stay out of trouble because obviously I'm not watching him enough!I've switched him to flint river ranch and am adding some meat. I used this with my other dogs before and it seemed to go over well, for kibble it looks fairly appetizing. Will test for worms this week, could this be why he always seems hungry and is eating all this cr*p.

You could add some plain yogurt to his diet; might help the loose stools...
