I was just wondering what do the stars below posters' names signify on the boards? Some people have 1 or 2, some have 5. What gives (bear with me, I'm a newbie.) :-)

It depends on how well people like you. It doesn't mean such a thing.

Actually, to put it a little more detailed. Anytime someone is talking, depending on their response to any given subject you can go in and rate that response. If several people give a response to that person on that same subject at the same time, then a star or stars will appear depending on how many people agreed on the number of stars to give. Did I say that right, Connie? LOL!

I don't even see where you "rate" someone's post.
The only think I see is where you "Rate This Topic", up near the "New Reply" button.
And I have even less of a clue why I have 3 stars

Hi Keith,
Click on a users name and go to their profile. At the bottom of the page you'll see a "Rate User" box. Be carefull though as the rating default is one star. You have to manually change the rating to what you intend.
Robbin, The ratings are for the members' general knowledge or help, not specifically for each thread. I think they go on an averaging system where if you get 10 ratings of various numbers they average the total. Sometimes when you piss off a person they give a bad rating because you might disagree with them, or a good rating for helping them.

Thanks for asking that Kori, I have wondered about that myself but never thought to ask!
Sending some stars your way!

Sometimes when you piss off a person they give a bad rating because you might disagree with them...
And this happens, too. These folks are so wrapped up in themselves that they can't tolerate mature discussion and free spirited debate. Then instead of actually accepting responsibiity for their lack of logic, they will say we should "Close this thread" or they will go try to get you some other way. Some people are so shallow...
Well, there goes my stars!

I have to disagree, Rick (and no, I'm not planning to "get you some other way").
I've been on other forums where free-spirited debate becomes a free-for-all. Check out the GSD Pedigree Database forum for a taste of immature discussion. From what I've seen threads are closed because of bad or dangerous advice or because they have nothing to do with training. I think the Mods do a pretty good job of keeping this a sane place.
People will disagree...that's a given...but at least here you are not chased from thread to thread and bashed (unless, of course, you're handing out a lot of bad advice).

Also, if you want to increase stars for someone, you click on more stars than they already have.
Say someone has three, and you want to increase them. Don't click one star, because that brings their average DOWN. You would click on MORE than the three they have.
And P.S., yes, sometimes it's a big fat popularity (or UNpopularity) thing. Every time I advocate neutering all pets, shelter dogs, and mutts (at full growth), my stars disappear.
So really, you have to not care. If you care, you'll have to stay out of controversy. And heaven knows that we thrive on controversy!
