I have bathed Levi twice in the last month and each time he smells good for a couple of days but then he starts to stink I don't know what is causing this dog to smell but I am afraid to keep bathing him due to oil loss in his coat. We do have three dogs and a good size back yard but not a huge one. Do you think laying in the grass outside where they all pee is cause for this? We keep the poo picked up religiously but we cant do anything about where they pee, i'm guessing the spinklers help somewhat with this but...
Also, he keeps finding and eating wood sticks. I've noticed other of my dogs do this and wonder why. Don't they get splinters in their tongues? What can I do to discourage this?

As far as the odor goes, a good daily brushing will go a long way to combat this. I totally agree about limiting the bathing. If you've got access to a large body of water, swimming may help as well. Swimming has tons of other benefits, but that wasn't what you asked.
For the stick issue, I've got the same issue. I just keep an eye on him and when he gets something a quick "Leave It" will send the stick to the ground. As for splinters, if they get one, it may deter them from going after sticks in the future. The tongue (in humans at least, not sure about dogs) is remarkably able to heal itself from injury.
Luck!

His odor may be related to his diet, but not necessarily the sticks.
Give them some good raw bones to occupy their time.
He would have to be laying in puddles of urine or layers of old dried urine for it to make him stink that quicky (dirty kennel), the sprinklers should wash the urine off the grass.

Levi is fed an all raw diet except for kibble on occasion and I feed the Taste of the Wild, which has no grain only meat and fruits/veggies. He is given EsterC/VitE with his dinner everynight. The only thing I have yet to purchase is the Salmon oil. I hope it's not his diet... No doubt 3 dogs peeing in the grass that is only about 12x18 might be a factor but like you said the sprinklers should wash that out. Although, we have gone down to only 3 days a week on the sprinklers..I dunno.

For temporary relief, try brushing with a doggy "perfume" - I have this natural green-tea scented conditioning spray I use when I brush Diaz, the scent isn't overwhelming and it lasts a while so I don't need to bathe so often.

Try giving him chlorophyll supplements. They are supposed to help mitigate odors.
A detox treatment might also help.
You could also give him a bath and run the sprinklers more often and see if that makes a difference on how fast he gets the stink.

I have the same problem with Brenna...we only give her a bath once or twice a month at the most, but it doesn't seem to matter. She's fine for 2 or 3 days and then she starts to smell again...it's a doggy kind of smell, not a sickly smell, but it is annoying. I thought that feeding raw and keeping her away from all the processed stuff would lessen sour smells on her, but that is not the case with her. We have a large furminator that we use often but it doesn't seem to help much, either.
It's worse when it rains, too...she really smells soured even after a bath when she gets wet. I've wondered if her coat has some type of mildew or mold in it? Has anyone heard of this? That's sort of what it smells like, not quite, but close enough.
We've tried several different shampoos and nothing seems to help. I've purchased those scented oils for dogs and then it just smells like putting perfume on a pig lol
sorry to hijack the thread, Robbin, but this is something I've never been able to figure out, either.

I've been told that you shouldn't bath your dog more often than ONCE every 4 to 6 weeks, but that you should brush daily.
When I was bathing my pup DAILY during potty training, I was warned that you shouldn't bath too often. If you are bathing frequently then you need to use something REALLY GENTLE. Even then, it really isn't recommended.
The transition from daily bathing to weekly bathing to monthly bathing was a little Stinkier than I would have liked. But now he smells great. During the transition to less bathing, I used BUDDY SPRAY, a body deoderant with skin/hair conditioner.

I've noticed NO dog smells all that great when they get wet. I think they smell musty, for want of a better word. As long as it's not that dirty-sock yeasty smell, I've just chalked it up to normal dog BO.

Hey Robbin,
I noticed with my other dog who was part Husky if his coat got got soaked, and I mean soaked all the way through from swimming or something along those lines I would notice that he would smell like an old wet towel thats been left in the Washing machine ( I can't think of another way to describe the smell.
I realized that even though his top coat dried quite quickly, his undercoat, which was quite thick took much much longer to dry and stayed pretty damp for a day or two, thus creating that smell.
I noticed it when I would brush him, his undercoat smelled horrible, and once i removed as much of it as I could his odour was much much better.
I don't suppose Levi swims alot or anything?
