Hope someone can help. I'm new to the board, and this is my first time logging in. We have a 41/2 month old dobie. When we first got him from the breeder he was on Nutramax Puppy. After reading and researching, we decided to switch him to one of the kibbles recommened on this website. About a month ago we switched to Innova. The problem we are having is interm. pudding poop and lots of gas. I'm ready to try another brand. Got any suggestions?
I've used Canidae for the last 4 yrs. Has been on the WDJ top 10 list since at least 1999. Very good for all stages, as well as dogs with allergies. Coats are all nice and shiny.
Angela-
thank-you for the response. Canidae was the one that I was thinking about, but a friend of mine said her dogs were really gassy on Canidae. My husband is leaning towards Calif. Natural. Have you heard anything about that one? Do you think we should still try Canidae first? I need to start the switch tomorrow because his gas is driving us out of the house!
I've not had any problems with gas. But evrey dog is different. Alot of my breeder friends feed Canidae with no problems. Heard of Calif. Nat. never used it. Pick up a sample pack or a 20lb bag and give Canidae a try! You can find a local reseller by going to canidae.com and going to the dealer locater button and entering in your area code.
Just to make the decision harder, I'll add my 2 cents worth. We started feeding California Natural about 5 weeks ago and I am very impressed with it. My husband's 3 year old Shepherd had been licking her nose excessively for about 2 years. Her nose was often raw looking and the skin was cracking. It was obviously very painful. We tried different foods, medicine from the vet, vaseline to moisten and protect- nothing made a difference. We thought it was a nervous habit and there was nothing we could do to stop the licking. Since changing foods Heidi's nose is almost completely healed up. Added benefit is that the beagle next door leaves bigger piles in the yard than our Shepherds do now. Also they tolerated the switch in foods very well.
Pamela- Is it time for me to flip a coin? The reason my husband wants to try Calif. Natural is because we were told it was the choice for any allergy potentials. You seemed to just confirm this! And , I might add, I'm totally interested in anything that will make him go from pudding poop to small, hard stools.

I think I remember hearing that Califormia Naturals and Innova are from the same company...I use both at various times but I never did check the label for the company names....
Did you take a stool sample to the vet? I would do so just to rule out any other possible causes besides diet, such as parasites or bacteria levels.
Solid Gold makes a nice group of products, and I also like Chicken Soup for Dogs and Eagle Pack Premium Holistic.
I don't know if you are giving your pup any chew things, but sometimes things like pig ears and rawhide chews can cause digestive upset. Not always, but it can happen....
Talk to your vet; I had a cousin that had a young GSD that had a similar problem, and turned out he was diagnosed with EPI. I don't know the prevalence in Dobes, but I guess I am saying that there may be other things to rule out besides only thinking it was from the diet...which of course, it may just be after all!
Hope this helps! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
No one ever said life was supposed to be easy, life is what you make of it!!
Portia- California Natural was recommended by a dobie owner on another site. That person said that even her dog's breeder was amazed at how her dog's coat looked when she started using this food. Another benefit is that even my husband's dog eats it with good appetite. Any dog will perk up for a new food but she's still excited to eat it after a month which is a miracle for her. Previously we were feeding Eagle Pack and she would just pick at it.
Innova and Ca. Natural are from the same company.
Ca. Natural is supposed to be their line of food recommended when there are allergies/digestive problems. Our dobie just got a clean bill of health from the vet, so I think it's a food problem only. I have never given him raw hide or pigs ears, which brings up another question. What is the best chew items for a teething puppy? I thought I had read someplace to stay away from raw hide, pigs ears, etc.
