Hey everybody, now I know there is alot of info out there and I just need a starting point. I am interested in it for next dog, but with so much info I find it overwhelming!! The closest club to me seems to be Ottawa, at least 1.5 hours away. I really don't know if this is something I want to try on my own. How does one start..that's my biggest question?? I know there's a protection dog forum but there's SO much there I'm confused!!
And look under the section titles " SchH Competition DVD's" and maybe look study a few of the recent championships to see what the top competitors look like during the big trials.
What is the name of the Ottawa club you are looking at? I travel between 1 to 1.5 hours myself to get to training. For the winter we will be training in a hall a little closer to home. The club I just started with is trying to attract new members, getting started is as easy as coming by the field and saying hello!
I did a search on DogsCanada, they have a list but it seems like I was mistaken and none of them seem to do Schutzhund . I also looked at the Ottawa German Shepherd Club http://www.ogsdc.ca but it doesn't look like they do it either.
I would love to watch to see exactly what I'd be getting into..I've watched some videos but I'd rather see the real thing and talk to people who are training their dogs. It'll still be a few months till I get a pup so I want to know as much as I can before I decide if I want a working dog or a 'couch potato' (just kidding!!)
We have the Belgian Schutzund Championships here in Meerhout Belgium this coming Sunday, I look forewards to learning a lot that day
Steve, ENJOY the Belgian SchH Championships!! I have no idea what the level of the Belgian Championships *are* - but if you are new to Schutzhund and just wanted to learn, it sounds awesome to me. Watching the Canadian National SchH3 Championships LIVE in 2004 changed Gary and my path, and goals with this sport! I hope you have fun!
In answer to your e-collar question - Nope. Not allowed on the competition field. But these tools are used regularly in training. There are lots of reward techniques as well that cannot be used on the competition field that are regularly used in training.
Have you found a good club or group or trainer to work with? I'm sure that will help a lot. But I know good resources are not always close at hand.
WOW never realised how lucky i am. I live 5 minutes from our field (Central Alabama Schutzhund Club) so i trane daily. This club produces great dogs I am able to trane with Eric Eisenburg 07 Schutzhund USA champion Our club President Gary Cooper is great, my bud.wa are connected to the Atlanta Club so wallace Payne is around. Not to mention all the other trainers and helpers.I am training for helper work at this time and with these people teaching me I can only go UP. Patty ever find yourself in Alabama come by and visit the club
Hey Doug..yes you're lucky. I know of one person who is trying to start a club in my area but I don't know if he's having much luck. Doesn't seem like there too many people who own the right type of dogs. Agility is pretty big around here but I don't really like the schools..very cliquey.
