Anyone ever have fleas? I know, silly question lol.
I think we have them here...maybe just a few of them anyhow. Daisy started it...she has some nice bald spots now. Lovely. Think she got the fleas from the groomers.
Grace seems to have them too...I can't find any fleas though, just a little bit of suspected flea dirt. Kira doesn't even have any flea dirt on her.
I gave them all Frontline on Sunday and that helped. I gave Daisy a bath this morning and didn't see one flea...and she didn't seem too dirty from flea dirt. I'm going to give Grace a bath tonight after work.
ARG!
Does anyone have any product recommendations? I hate using chemicals around Grace as she is super sensitive...it was a risk to put the Frontline on her! But we need something to stop any that are around the house/still on the dogs, specifically to stop eggs/larvae.
Help!

Fleas freak me out.
I'll pass on what a woman I know uses on her Wolfhounds. She is very holistic-minded and won't put chemicals on her dogs.
She uses essential oils...and specifically lemongrass oil for flea control. She doesn't have a constant problem but she said her dogs will occasionally pick up fleas at the groomers and this oil gets rid of them. I don't know how effective it is on eggs and larvae and I have no first-hand experience using it myself.

Frontline plus kills every stage of the flea's development (Eggs, Larva and Adults).
"All FRONTLINE products offer control of fleas, killing up to 100% of adult fleas on your pet within 18 hours. And with an added ingredient to kill flea eggs and larvae, FRONTLINE Plus completely breaks the life cycle of these dangerous and annoying pests."
You should not give a bath right before or after the application of the product. It is something like 48 hours before or after.

My experience with newly-adopted dogs with a lively infestation is that no-chemical preventives can be great AFTER the problem is under control.
A dog who has bald spots from fleas is showing signs of flea hypersensitivity, which is the #1 cause of skin pruritis. You don't want the dog to start getting skin infections and hot spots from scratching and biting.
I'm not a big fan of chemicals either, but flea hypersensitivity is something that really needs to be dealt with and not allowed to trigger long-term problems which could then require even more meds (like antibiotics and even steroids).
So I would use the Frontline and also vacuum thoroughly every day for several days and get the used vacuum bag out of the house.
Soon flea season will be past and the dogs won't be bringing them in. The one who is hypersensitive can heal completely. There's no broken skin yet, right?

I have used Sentinel for years and I really like it. It is oral. I don't like the topical stuff. The Sentinel is one pill once a month. Costs me $11 a month per dog. Takes care of heartworm, hookworm, whipworm and fleas.
Even in hot, humid FLorida I have not seen a flea on my dogs in more than 10 years
Always looking for training avenues close to home. Any suggestions? |

One thing about Sentinel is that it's a multi-pest product. Where you live, you might have all the pests it's meant for, year-round.
But there would be many areas that don't have (for example) fleas all winter. They would have to keep up the product in order to get (for example) the heartworm treatment. That would be administering chemicals that weren't necessary for a good part of the year.
Sentinel is for fleas, heartworm, roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms.

I stopped at the store and got some flea spray for the house...also got a flea comb. I'll use them and vacuum a lot, as Connie suggested.
Daisy seems to be feeling much better after a bath. She does have one small open sore, but it's from a few days ago. She has left it alone so far and it is healing (and I have been putting antibiotic ointment on it). She is not one to pay much mind to her coat, etc.
I gave the Frontline on Sunday night, so we are good for baths.
Thanks all...I'm off to bath a GSD that hates the bathtub...too cold to get out the kiddie pool...yeck...

Well, that wasn't fun.
Next question, Grace has quite a bit of irritation on her inner thighs. I just bathed her with a hydrocortisone shampoo and combed her thoguh with the flea comb (nothing found). Does anybody have any experience with giving Benedryl pills for this type of reaction?

What is the irritation from, and how does it look? Bumps? Open skin? Is she scratching or biting at it? (That is, is it itching her?)
Or do you mean it's flea bites?

She is not scratching much at all...just a little here and there and not necessarily in the spots where she has irritated skin. She hasn't been particularly itchy though.
It was also very localized. A little spot here with some flea dirt,a bump or two, reddened skin, all on the inner thighs.
I did find one dead flea on her bedding...
I'm assuming that we had a few hanging out, hopefully they are going, going, gone!!
