While I know that a thin dog is better than an overweight one, how do you get an almost 2 year old female to gain weight? She's been eating Flint River Ranch for a few months and is just so thin. Not to mention the fact that no matter how much I feed her she doesn't gain.
Hello Janet. You're post seems to be under the wrong topic. It might get moved by one of the moderators. I don't have any experience with using weight gain type products for dogs but here is a link that sells some weight gain products and other stuff. Hope this helps.
I think the first thing that I would do is take a stool sample to the vet and have it checked for worms.
Eventhough all my dogs are on Heartgard Plus, I take a stool sample to the vet every three months, and this last time my dogs had whips, they all were treated with Panacure.
Thanks. I did take her to the vet. It's not worms. He wasn't sure why, but she's not digesting her food properly. I'm adding something called "ProBalance" to her food. It's excellent stuff, but quite pricey. Is there something similar that's less expensive? Is Missing Link the same thing?
The Pro Balance is a biochemical delivery system that allows vitimens and fatty acids to be absorbed more easily, usually in instances of stress. Missing Link is a good supplement, but it is not the same.
Would there be an instance where she would need both Missing Link and ProBalance?
The vet checked her stool and found nothing that shouldn't be there.
Maybe I should switch her back to raw?
Since she hasn't had diarrhea is it certain that she has EPI? She's is responding well to ProBalance.
My next question is about breeding her. I don't want to hurt her in any way, and if this would be dangerous please let me know.
If she can barely squeeze enough nutrients from her food for herself, there is no way she could support puppies as well. Not even to mention the possible genetic basis of the malabsorbtion problems.
Find out the root of the problem before you think about breeding her. EPI is a progressive autoimmune disease, so you could have just caught it in the early stages. There is no way to know without further testing.
