I plan on retiring soon to Costa Rica. I will bring my dogs. How will this kind of temperature and humidity affect a Mal and Dutch Shepherd.

They'll go through a period of acclimation but there shouldn't be any problems for your dogs. They'll most likely take it easy during the heat of the day and you'll probably need to adjust playing and exercising times for the coolest times of the day.
Take a Furminator with you since they'll probably shed up a storm in the beginning.
Sounds like a nice retirement, Lee.

I was in Costa Rica (in San Jose) for a total of over 3 years and it never hit 100 degrees. It's much more like our spring weather in the states, between 75 and 85 degrees almost consistently and year-round. Just curious why you think it hits 100 degrees there? It may get a little past 90 in some areas in Costa Rica, but it's definitely not consistently 100 degrees anywhere I've ever been in that country.
The humidity will, however, make a curly headed person (like me) look like they have a persistent halo, and you have to be careful with mold in damp dark places around the home.

Sandy- I lived in Costa Rica myself for 4 years. My wife is a Tica (Costa Rican). I vacation there regularly. All my in-laws live in C.R. San Jose is in a area known as the central valley. It is actually a plateau with a minimum elevation of 2500 feet above sea level. The weather near the beaches at sea level. Guanacaste Province in northwest C.R. regularly hits 100 degree temperatures and is usually 95 plus. The Osa Peninsula in the southwest is rain forest and also hits those those temperatures regularly. I will be retiring to one of those two areas. You are right about mold plus in the rain forest, lots of bugs, snakes, scorpions of every variety. The reason I asked the question is because I had my Rott with me when I lived there before. He was not very happy. I was hoping that these new different breed dogs would adjust better.

Oh, yeah, well if you're going to be in one of those areas, the dogs might have more of a hard time . I don't know that in those temps and high humidity that any breed adjusts that well. But could be wrong. I figured San Jose would be where you were heading which is where I lived with my 2 dogs. No problem with the temps there for them.

I read somewhere that Israel now is using Mal's for patrol work. They used to use GSD's and Rotts. I presume its very hot there, but I doubt there is much humidity. There are areas right here in the States that get pretty darn hot with lots of humidity. Hopefully, I will get some posts from people in those areas. There are lots of dogs in the areas of Costa Rica that I mentioned. They are mutt types obviously born into that environment. If it becomes apparent that my dogs won't adapt I will select a different cooler area in C.R. My Rott was happy only when he was at the beach swimming or after nightfall. Other than he dug a hole and laid under a tree.

Sefi Sahar, one of Leerburg forum's members, works Mals in Israel, patrol, bomb sniffing, etc. He hasn't posted for a while, maybe he's in the field but you could possibly private message him. Don't know if he'll receive it soon or if he'll even see this post. But worth a try.

Lee, go to "Search" which is almost at the very top of this page, next to Active Topics, then enter the member's name, in this case Sefi Sahar, in the text box under Display Name Search. Then under Date Range enter "Newer than - 1 year". I've found entering 1 year gives the search engine a good broad range to find members or topics, even if you know a topic is only a month old or so.
After a page comes up with Sefi Sahar's posts, click on his name, and on his profile page, click on Send a Private Message.

It's going to hit 100 degrees today in the Northeast area. How do you folks deal with your dogs in this heat? I left my new rescue in his crate with water and a fan blowing into the crate. Is that enough? Should I have the AC on all day while I'm at work? Anything else I should be thinking about here? Thanks in advance.
Louie!
