I found some videos from the Atibox IPO world championship. As I am not very experienced with protectionwork, I wondered if anyone would help me a little and tell me what you think about the different dog's performances? What is good, what is bad? Are these dogs far inferior to GSDs on the same level?
I am currently searching for a sport/PP prospect, and the boxer is the dog that appeals to me the most. But that nagging feeling of getting a "mediocre" dog prevents me of going wholeheartedly for a boxer.
Both from the videos and your personal experiences, what are the boxers biggest strenghs and weaknesses in protection work?
The dogs with the highest scores in protection are the following:
Genny z Ringu
Marco von Westfeld
Sky Bridge Eddie van Halen
Scores on any given day don't necessarily reflect the ability of a dog for lots of reasons. There were a lot of good dogs at that trial that I've seen in person, who are fantastic and just had an "off" day. Also keep in mind schutzhund is a sport and the idea is to get points, the handler can cost points, little mistakes, etc, again not necessarily representative of the dog's ability. That being said, schutzhund was designed for GSDs not Boxers and that shows. Boxers in Europe compete in schutzhund regularly and do well however. I got my dog from Germany and he is coming along nicely. I wouldn't own any other dog than a Boxer for sport or protection because of their temperment which is imo perfectly suited to a protection dog. A well trained properly bred Boxer is as capable in the protection portion of the sport or in the real world as any other breed.
